Can you feel your spleen if it's enlarged?
« on: November 25, 2007, 07:05:26 PM »
I'm in the middle of a leukemia freak out (chronic lymphocytic leukemia to be specific).  I've had a little discomfort just under my ribs on the left side and I'm worrying that my spleen is enlarged.  Also, when I push in (only when standing - not laying down), I feel something in there (not sure what).  Any idea if the spleen is that close to the surface that I could feel it myself?  Thanks.

Theres a reason why doctors have us lie down when we are examined.  It is difficult to determine if there is an abnormality in that region because when we stand, gravity brings everything down.  Apparently when we lie down, things fall back into place.  A few years ago I had a bump that could only be felt when I would lay down. It turned out to be a hernia (I had several abdominal surgeries in the past) which I had repaired.  Chances are if you can't feel it when you are lying down then it's not there.

You normally get a swollen spleen with infection like mono or something similar. Even if it was swollen there are >600 reasons for it.

I doubt its your spleen you felt, it lies on the left but almost on the side.

I wouldnt worry about this, if you are worried get the doctor to examine you.
