Very DARK stools! Getting really worried!
« on: April 09, 2012, 05:01:00 AM »
The other day, I had about 4 cups of chocolate ice cream (which was somehow dark in color) with lots of mini Hershey's kisses. I had broccoli for dinner too.

Yesterday morning, I went to the toilet to see my stool very very dark. I honestly do not know if it can qualify as black or just very very dark brown.  The consistency of the stool was more or less formed. Not the wet-like stool.

I think that was the first time I saw my poop that dark. I just recovered from a month of on and off loose stools. For the past 3 weeks, my stools have been "normal" until this morning. I don't think I have any other unusual symptoms that can be associated with my stomach issues.

I just came from the last night to poop again. Stool's consistency was formed/okay. Some of the stool pieces were yellow brown in color while there was a huge chunk of stool (sorry TMI!) that was rather green and dark green. Again, the very dark green part is making me qualify it as black stool (the tip of the stool was somewhat very dark!).

I tried wiping my bottom with toilet paper and what I only saw were yellow brownish stuff.

My GI physician told me that stool color can change based on what you eat. Your darker stools
are from the chocolate that you ate and the green one was from the broccoli that you ate. When you
have IBS or are under stress, my GI doctor also told me that food passes through your digestive
system too quickly, thus the green color of your stools.

It's from the chocolate, I would wager.  Mine turns black as night after I eat Oreos.  Freaked me out the first time, and then was like waaaaait a minute...

Nothing to worry about here. it will change colors for all kinds of reasons. only worry when you start seeing significant amounts of blood. When there is blood, it looks significantly different than what you are describing. dont read online about the black color, that can happen from even drinking grape juice. if you dont believe me, eat a bunch of blueberries and see what it looks like 24 hrs later. it will be black.

Thank you john, molly, and marc.

I just came from the toilet to do my business and my poop was perfectly formed and the color has gone lighter (yellow green-ish). I did wipe with tissue paper and the color was yellowish-green. Sorry TMI! No black spots or whatever.

I just wanna ask:

1.) Was that a good sign?
2.) What does one mean by tarry? I've googled "tar' images just to be sure, but I get images of tar in different colors and consistencies. Is it that one that is sort of like thick semi-liquid and sticky and jet black?
3.) If this were something really serious, shouldn't I have more symptoms like fatigue, constant stomachache, vomitting, etc.?

hey,
i had very dark stool this morning too, and i didn't eat chocolate or green vegetable or something to cause this. I have IBS, i often have stomach pains.
i can clearly say it's from chocolate and brocoli you ate. so i wasn't worry if i were you.

If you have tarry stool from bleeding you'll definitely know. It's very abnormal-looking (not just dark) and it also smells like nothing you've ever smelled before - my husband had a bleeding ulcer once, and his whole hospital room smelled of it. I'm sure what you had is from something you ate; like someone else said, I've eaten Oreos before and had a similar experience.

Quit looking at your poop!  :laugh3: It changes color based on what you ate and really, there is no need to analyze it! If it is formed, you are fine.

Mine change color from light brown to very very dark brown and everything in between. and I also have blood (red) from hemorhoides that I have had all my life, sometimes there are drops of blood in the toilet water. A colonoscopy every 5 years rests my worries

Have you taken any pepto bismal in the past little while by chance? This happened to me and pepto can actually turn your poop black. I freaked out at first but then remembered my pepto binge (spicy thai food required extra strength pepto!)

I always look!
Last year I was so annoyed when my wife started using tidy bowl I couldn't see in the water.

ImObsessed, your wife was trying to help you.   Let the Tidy Bowl Guy worry about the s-it.  That's his job.  Your stools will change with foods and drinks and emotions.
