Little tiny black spot on toenail! Melanoma?
« on: July 31, 2011, 02:24:31 PM »

Its been awhile and I've been sooooo good!

But a couple of weeks ago I noticed what looked like a tiny spot of dirt or grease either on on underneath my toenail. Won't come off and doesn't seem to be getting bigger!!!!

Did you know there is a such thing as freaking TOENAIL melanoma? SHEEESH
Calling the derm....H thinks its a little blood blister. But that type of spot is often how this type of M starts!

Never heard of it...I seriously doubt that it is cancer.

Most likely nothing. If it drives you crazy, I would call your physician.

My son had this last week - under his nail a little and on the edge of his toe. It was black and looked creepy! Almost like someone took a Sharpie pen and drew it on. Well, it was just a bruise. It is totally gone now. I think he got it b/c one of his shoes was a little small and he hit hit toe on something. Runners get black toes all the time. I'd give it a solid week before going in.

Ive had a little purple crescent on my toenail for years now. I never really stressed about it, doctor says it's a birthmark but I don't remember it when I was young. Nothing serious, and i'm probably one of the worst hypochondriacs you'll find here.

Also just to make you feel better my dad is a Vietnam Veteran and he has had many many "Spots" on him from the sun in Indochina, mainly Basal and Squamous Cell cancers.  Only one time did he have melanoma and it was caught immediately, also it was "Insitu""SP?" which means that it grew horizontally and not vertically, which basically saved him.

Melanoma is an oddly shaped mole, it isn't perfectly assymetrical like most moles but is strangely shaped... kind of like what you would find in a babies diaper. Also you would notice it growing, and it would take longer than a few days..
