How do you stop being scared 24/7?
« on: September 04, 2014, 07:55:19 PM »
I'm always scared. "Always" is no exaggeration. There is always thus feeling of impending doom. No matter what I do, it is always there in my brain. It's impossible to forget. I'm constantly trying not to fall to deeply into it, because I know if I did I would have a panic attack. I have trouble sleeping because of it, and as usual I always wake up at least once at night. The fear/impending doom is even there when I wake up in the middle of the night. It wakes me up in the morning. I try to get a little more sleep, but as soon as I'm awake my stomach ties itself in knots and that's it- my day has begun. This fear never, ever, ever leaves me. I am always scared. I can never feel safe, no matter how hard I try to convince myself everything is ok. Distraction doesn't help either. I'm tired of feeling like this.  I've been thinking that maybe it's time to accept that this is just the way it is, but I can't. Things just can't be like this forever. How do I stop feeling scared all the time? I'm done with this.

Hi.

Maybe it is time for medication, if that is an option for you?  I have to say clonazepam really got me through the last few years.
The last few weeks I have not been able to take them though and have really struggled.  Like you I have been waking up with knots in my stomach and pure dread at facing the day.  I have to look into alternatives without the pills and started to listen to guided meditations in the morning.  it has somewhat helped with general anxiety. even if i wake up uneasy, after the meditation this morning I felt better.  Have been looking into the mindfulness meditations and more recently the accepting and commitment models.  It is new to me so I cannot explain it, but the idea is to watch these feelings and thoughts as an outsider without fusing with them.  I'll link the short meditation I did this morning to give you idea.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLlVV3dKl9w

I still remember - it started in 1979 - my world started to crumble....still having panic attacks and constantly on a 24/7 alert mode, that would not give me rest,   For the next 13 years :dazed:  - I tried everything I could find for a solution - CBT, Self-Hypnosis, religion, and every supplement you can think of!  I was scared to death of  B-;  - of using any prescribed medications, yet I had very little results to show for my all my work. >:(

In extreme frustration, I was determined not lose another decade of my life to this illness - I finally reached my breaking point!

I finally found a brilliant psychiatrist that understood how Panic and Anxiety disorders worked – back in early 1990’s.  And I trusted him, I would take whatever medication under his supervision - until I would get this FEAR off my back.

My doctor established – a program that included a daily benzodiazepine (Klonopin) to control the day to day anxiety levels along with an SSRI type medication to help establish a long term solution in resolving any “biological” problems that have been resolved at the chemical levels by slowly repairing and creating new serotonin receptors – returning the chemicals receptors back to its normal healthy mode.

The best decision I ever made to reclaim my life!

But, for most people it will take a long time to get to THIS BREAKING POINT!.   It took me over 13 years  ::)

In medication - There is no such thing as a "Magic Pill"  - it will take time for you and your doctor to find the right dosage and right medication, there will be some temporary side effects, ... but the vast improvements in the quality of your life will be worth it!

In the end, the question each of us must ask ourselves, I am ready to move on to the next step?

Hi.

Understanding that the feelings are just feelings is the key to healing.

Try to shift your feeling.

Listen to music that makes you feel good, read something that brings you peace. Go for a walk. Dance.

Allow the fear to be there without fighting it.

Turn your attention from it to something else.

When you feel the fear so intense breathe through it. Know that it will pass. Try not to fight it.

If you can practice the allowance of it, you'll find it happens less and less.

Message me if this helps and you'd like extra help. :)

Thank you all for your replies. They were very helpful and kind. :-)
LuLu, thanks for the meditation video. Maybe it will help.
I take several things for anxiety, actually. St. John's Wort, Gabba, phosphorus three times a day. I take this special drink mix twice a day, and vitamin B12 once a day, as my doctor said it would help, too.
Martita, I'll try not fighting it. See how it goes.

I hear a lot of people talking about doing a lot of things to try and get your mind off it. But thats just avoiding the anxiety, and that cannot make it go away. Some things may calm you down, but in the end, you'll still have issues, your anxiety still unresolved.

Ive found that by far the best solution is to intentionally, repeatedly, terrify yourself. On purpose. You have to stop being scared of the sensation of being scared. The only way to do that, is to cause it over and over again. Its been the single most successful thing I've ever done in regards to my anxiety, and though i still get attacks, im not truly scared of them anymore.

But then, I've always been a bit different.
