Splinter hemorrhages?! Please help!
« on: August 29, 2014, 05:46:14 PM »
I've noticed that over the past four or five months I've had splinter hemorrhages on and off.  Usually I notice them in two or three fingers at a time, and they will grow out, only for a couple new ones to appear a couple weeks later.  I know it's not from nail trauma and I know I don't have endocarditis, so what could it be?!  It's really causing me a lot of anxiety and panic because I keep reading its related to serious illness.  Please help!  Thanks

You'd be surprised at how little "nail trauma" it takes too cause them.  Bending a nail or biting them causes them.  I have at least one at any given moment because my nails are weak and easily damaged.

Agree!  I noticed I get them after opening a pop top can like cat food / dog food.

Splinter hemorrhages that are near the end of the nail (where you'd file) are almost always benign where hemorrhages (without injury) that start under the cuticle and come up out of the nail bed is more suspicious for heart concerns but ONLY in 15% of people with serious heart problems.  It's NOT a good indicator of anything.
