Acting like myself but don't feel like myself
« on: August 23, 2014, 02:53:17 PM »
For about a month now I've felt this way (as some of you who read this probably already know).
It's like I act the same as I always have even when anxious. But on the inside I don't feel like the same person. I just feel "off" like I'm questioning everything about my life and doing actions.
It's like I was once an automatic car and now I've traded myself in for a manual and I don't know how to drive a stick shift.
It's like I have new eyes and I don't like how I'm seeing the world.
I keep thinking I have a brain tumor -- like in my mind that's the only explanation.

I'm tired of not feeling like myself and having to forcefully ***** my thoughts off just to feel "kinda sorta" normal.

I can't get a counselor because I don't have enough money to pay for it and no one takes my insurance. So that's out of the question.

It's just so frustrating. I've been crying so much these past few days because I don't know what to do.

Its called Dissociation and is extremely common with anxiety sufferers. Most of us here have felt the same way. But I do have a solution.

Stop being upset by it, or scared, or frustrated. Accept it is there and it will happen. By worrying so much about it, you are accidentally making it worse. You need to regard it as a temporary shift in perception, because that's what it is. By doing this it will have less power over you, and it won't last as long when it happens. Eventually, you'll just stop being upset by it all together, and it will pass before you know it.

This is easier said than done, obviously. But its the only way to make it stop. You are in the worst, earliest stages of this sensation. It gets better. And you can always come here to get reassurance if you need it.

Thank you for replying. I appreciate it. I mean I made the connection that it's probably that but since it's been. Happening for a month or maybe a little longer I fear that it's a tumor making me feel this way.
I'm trying not to let it bother me though.

I felt similarly with GAD.  Are there any clinics in your area?  In Chicago, I found a clinic with student therapists as low as $20 a session.
