An elevated temperature isn't technically considered a fever until it's 100.0, or 100.4 depending on your source. Anxiety can slightly raise your temperature, it has to me on at least half a dozen occasions. Allergy season is severe this year. Or very likely as you yourself said, is a summer virus. they happen and they are no more remarkable than the winter or fall kind.
As Dr. Cox from Scrubs says "When you hear hoofbeats, think horsies, not zebras"
Meaning if it acts just like a cold, assume it's something common---a cold! (or in our analogy, a horse) NOT cancer (the zebra)
