Single inflamed tonsil... should I worry?
« on: August 20, 2014, 12:52:23 PM »
So, I've been having minor sore throats on and off with swallowing difficulty. I've had the whole ALS fear that I'm trying to put behind me... I checked my throat and noticed my left tonsil is swollen and has a few white marks on it. Two little white bubble looking things. The right  isn't visible at all.

Is this something to worry about? My friend is a nurse and mentioned one swollen tonsil could be a likely sign of cancer, but at 26 it would be very unlikely.

I really doubt you have cancer. From my experience it sounds like some sort of virus or infection! I would definitely call your doctor. They can probably get you on antibiotics and you'll be good to go :)

Honestly, that's what I figured. Maybe tonsil stones. I'll call my ENT and schedule an appointment, if they're stones he can remove them. I figured I would ask :D

Thanks.

My right tonsil is always the only one that has a problem, I never even see the left one puffed out or anything - it's like it doesn't exist!   Whether it's a huge tonsil stone or gets infected.  Don't forget, a tonsil is a lymph node, it could just be the one side, nothing to worry about.

I don't think that ALS presents this way.  It sounds to me like more of a mild infection that will probably go away on its own.  Similar things have happened to me before and it's always just been irritation in my mouth.  Remember, ALS is about muscles, not tonsils.

A giant tonsil usually means an infection or an irritant like a tonsil stone being present.  Have you tried gargling with saltwater or peroxide and water?  Both of those help me when I have a sore throat.
