Uncertain about doctor
« on: August 19, 2014, 06:52:46 PM »
I visited my doctor today to talk to her about my painful shoulders and neck. We got to talking about the fact that I am getting married soon, and as I was leaving, my doctor hugged me. Oh. My. Gawd. The immediate horror I felt at thinking that she could have any number of infectious diseases on her coat. Am I crazy to think that as a health care practitioner that is NOT something she should do? I washed my hands after, but who knows if that was good enough. I feel kinda silly for being horrified by that interaction, but I am also considering changing doctors. The unprofessional quality of that gesture makes me question her judgment in other arenas of my health :/ Am I being too extreme here?

She likes you, and feels a rapport with you. I personally wouldn't mind. You are being unreasonable about the germ thing, but some people just don't like to be touched without their permission. If you feel she was out of bounds, she was.

You are being waaaaay too extreme. Look at it this way, you have just been given confirmation that your Doctor actually cares about you. There are no germs on her coat, otherwise she would be sick too, its her coat and she will probably wear it tomorrow and the day after. Relax its fine.

I am with Raawr, your reaction is extreme.

MOST anxiety occurs on a subconscious level.  JUST because you don't feel consciously anxious or had a day or two of calm doesn't mean your mind & body are relaxed.  It can take months of reduced anxiety before a body goes back to a more non-reactive state

Okay, okay, I'm a terrible person.

I was just always under the impression that medical attire could harbor bacteria and viruses. I worked at an animal clinic for a time and was always sure not to wear my scrubs around my pets when I got home from work. But, I washed my hands, so who cares.

I think it was a very nice gesture by a caring and nice person. Doctors like that are hard to find now days. Your doctor sounds like a good one to me.

My doctor gave me a hug last visit as we'll. I really appreciated it as it was such a kind and comforting gesture. Thoughts of germs didn't even cross my mind.

The chance of picking up germs from your doctor is a lot smaller than other places you could go (water fountains, public bathrooms, ATM machines etc).

I understand someone having an issue with personal space, but this doctor just sounds like someone compassionate and caring. At the end of the day, just be happy you have a doc who doesn't just view you as another file in their cabinet :)
