cervical cancer worries
« on: July 05, 2014, 07:21:46 PM »
It has been quite awhile since Iíve posted here. My hypochondria always flares up again when I have a stressful event in my life. A month ago my dog, who is my boyfriend and my life was diagnosed with cancer.  She is still with us and hopefully we can keep her going for awhile but it was so traumatic so here I am back with anxiety.

Right now I am on the cervical cancer train. Iím 29, and have had few sex partners in my lifetime, maybe 3. I havenít had a pap in a little over 2 years, last one was April 2012. The guidelines keep changing and it is confusing but from what I understand it is 3 years now for my age group. Another thing I think that precipitated this anxiety is my friend is also 29 and she had an abnormal pap come back a few weeks ago and she goes every year. She has been with her husband for 13 years! They told her to come back in 3 months and retest.

Ever since then Iíve been googling stuff trying to figure out the recommendations. I keep seeing how people saying these guidelines are terrible and that women are getting cervical cancer now. Iíve read people commenting and saying how they went from a normal smear to cervical cancer in a year. Now I am freaking out that Iíve waited too long.

I havenít been taking the best care of myself lately b/c of school and the stress of my dog. Yesterday I got sick to my stomach and it feels like pelvic pain. Iíve had it today too, and it feels like pressure. But this is all freaking me out. I have an appointment on Wednesday and Iím scared to sit and wait for results b/c the next day I canít come in. If they tell me I have to come in to hear the results I will die. I hope it takes longer than that.

Anybody who has been on the cervical cancer worry train have any insight?

I went through this not long ago but I did actually have an abnormal Pap smear (CIN2) after a normal Pap smear two years earlier. I ended up having a biopsy and the result was mild dysphasia not CIN2! My specialist said that cervical cancer doesn't happen over night. The cells of the cervix have to go through several changes first that usually takes 10-15 years. Pls just go and have a Pap smear. If anything is found it will only be early changes that are easily treated :) every 2-3 years is the usual recommendation for a Pap smear, depending where your from.

I am so sorry to hear about your dog. That's difficult to go through and it is understandable that it has caused an anxiety flare up.
I want to assure you that it is highly unlikely that you have cervical cancer. It is really important to get regular Pap smears (2-3 years) which it sounds like you have done. So go and get one and then it's done for another 2-3 years! You really don't have anything to worry about :)

Thank you it just freaks me out. I feel like 3 years is so long cause I've read horror stories where women have gone from normal to full-blown cervical cancer in less than a year. UGH I hate hearing about things like that! Makes me feel like I should be going every year when they say 3 years. That obviously doesn't correlate with the 10-15 years cancer thing :( I'm getting it done Wednesday... now it is just keeping my sanity till then. Well actually it will be longer to hear the results :(

They changed the guidelines for a reason, and after many, many years of studying it. Last year I went in for mine after 4+ years of not having one. I was so scared that I was diligent about setting mine up on time this year. I went in (I use Military healthcare) and she would NOT do my pap! She told me the lab will not carry out the test on samples from women with paps sooner than 3 years!! I was a little mad at this, but she told me they would actually throw out the test. I take this as a sign of how confident they are in these new guidelines. Does it save them money? Of course. But in the long run, it does not save them if someone gets cervical cancer.

You don't have any reasons (symptoms) to make you believe you have cancer. Just go and get it over with and you'll feel so much better! :happy0151:

Wow that is so crazy! They said they would actually throw it out? I would hope they are super confident because I don't think these tests cost a lot of money. I mean geez!
Its been a little over 2 years since mine and I'm going to the same place I was (Planned Parenthood). I really hope I don't get in there and they won't do it. :/

Yeah, it was crazy!! I specifically mentioned about Military healthcare because they have different ways of operating than civilian. If you're paying for something out of pocket, I don't see how they could possibly tell you they won't do it. Don't worry.

Sorry about your dog.  It's totally normal for HA to get worse in times of stress.

I had an abnormal pap a couple of years ago.  I went back in six months, it came back normal, was supposed to go back in another six months...and forgot about it for almost a year and a half.  Just got it done a couple of weeks ago, totally normal.  So even if you get a weird result, remember, it usually doesn't mean anything.  In my case I had HPV which caused some problematic cells, but everything resolved itself.

I would call your doctor and discuss your concerns and see if they'll do a pap regardless of how long it's been.  Two years doesn't seem unreasonable to me so I'm guessing they'll do the test, but might as well make sure first.  Odds are you're fine, and even if the results are off, odds STILL are you're fine.
