Still worried about my pancreas...
« on: July 04, 2014, 08:37:41 PM »
Hi all,
After all these weeks I still don't have a clear idea of what's going on with me and I'm super worried.
Basically, my GI specialist told me that I'm not digesting fat (he called it malabsorption). He then did a colonoscopy and endoscopy which showed reflux. That's all he has told me about that. He tested for bacterial overgrowth, results are not in yet.
But my symptoms worry me - terrible reflux, pain in my right shoulder and stools that either look like I digested good or won't flush away. I also have stomach cramps, particularly on the right next to my navel.
So I went to my GP on wed and told her I'm worrying about my pancreas and she ran more blood tests. She checked my lipase, amylase and sugar (diabetes). Apparently all came back good.
I guess my question is, if I did have somehow terrifying like PC, would my bloods be off by now? Would they at least suggest something was wrong even if blood tests can't diagnose it?
Please help... Any ideas would be much appreciated!!

Odds are your Lipase or Amylase would be off. Pancreatic cancer is predominately a cancer of the elderly.

What do you mean your stools don't flush?

Do you see oil rings in the toilet water?

How is the odor?

And what is the texture of the stool?

When I wipe my stool looks like peanut butter texture with a wet slime on it. Im terrified it's fat malabsorption. It started after antibiotics

Ok so I have (very stupidly) had a bit of a google. I am now completely freaking out! I went to the loo about an hour ago and stool was weirder than usual, oily residue in water and kinda pale, and I have stomach cramps and reflux, so what do I do... Spend an hour reading up on how it could be something very very scary. Pls help am so worried  :( As far as I know my basic blood panel was ok but I just want my doc to give me an answer - why do I have the fat malabsorption issue?
My husband and I are also about to start trying to conceive and I keep having these terrifying thoughts of finding out I have a disease while pregnant. I'm beside myself - anyone???

Have you been tested for glucose intolerance?
Symptoms are identical to my cousin who has it.

You would be extremely sick by now if it were sinister.
That type of cancer is not one to slowly sneak up. It's pretty obvious and severe.

It is also extremely rare in a young woman.

You may even have IBS.

Congrats on planning for a baby!!  Don't let anxiety steal he joy of this next stage in your life!!
I know HA lives to come in and turn things upside down in the midst if big changes..;-)

Thanks for replying Jer!! I have recently had my sugar tested - is that the same as being tested for glucose intolerance?
It's just so hard not to worry amidst all these persevering symptoms. My GI doc keeps telling me to come back in 2 wks or 3 wks which means this whole process has been dragging on and on. I feel totally in the dark and it's causing me to create scenarios to explain my symptoms.
Right now as I am writing I have upper abdominal pain (right side) and really bad reflux. It's always something.  I think is feel better if I had an ultrasound of my pancreas but I'm scared to ask for one - I'm scared of what they'll find!! And I'm scared that I'll think they've missed something if they find nothing - I'm just a mess with this whole thing.
You're right though, I can't let it distract me from this exciting life stage.  Really doing my best in that regard and am genuinely excited about hopefully becoming a mom. I pray I won't make my children anxious about their health... :/

Thanks iamhealthy - I originally did think gallbladder but my doc doesn't seem to think so.

Is it possible to have fat malabsorption *just because* without any specific reason or disease causing it? Can it be IBS? I don't want to google anymore... :(

Did you ever find out about your pancreas or if you had fat malabsorption? Or if you just have IBS?

Thanks, stay healthy :)

Hey iamhealthy! I never got a proper answer. It is definitely fat malabsorption but doc still doesn't know why. I'm having a very intricate stool test done next week so maybe that will tell me something. Doc said my pancreas is not making a specific enzyme they just gotta figure out which one. But I think if it were anything sinister like PC I would have deteriorated by now, and I haven't it's just been more of the same.
I have also been taking digestive enzymes with every meal which have helped a lot.
Hope you're doin well!
