U shaped blind spot for 10 minutes
« on: June 19, 2014, 04:58:49 PM »
So I was leaving work today and I have Heath anxiety. While walking to my car I noticed I had a sideways "u" shaped blind spot in my vision. Being the crazy person I am I immediately thought I was having a stroke and drove to the hospital on my way home. Of course then the anxiety kept getting worse. When I got to the hospital I called my boyfriend and he talked me down from the ledge. And then it went away. I didn't eat much al day so I kinda attribute it to that. Occasionally I get small short blind spots. Does this happen to anyone else? Pleas help.

Sometimes you can get an ocular migraine without the pain - you just get the aura. I've had those before.

Yeah, I've had those before as well - go blind in weird shapes for a while and then you're fine again without anything else. Asked an optician about it once and he said it was the visual aspect of a migrane without the headache.

Its called a "scintillating scotoma" and is the result of a cortical spreading depression. It doesnt need to be associated with pain, though it often is. It goes away when the spreading depression stops, which doesnt take that long.  You're actually kinda lucky, some of them can get really weird. Like when everything breaks into triangles, or the scotoma is a shimmering rainbow or is nearly invisible but forming a sharply curved arc.

It actually kinda was a shimmering rainbow. That's the only way I can describe it besides metallic?

That definitely sounds like a migraine.  Those weird metallic blind spots and rainbow spots are both migraine auras.  My mom and I both get them.  I find mine can be cut shorter if I cover my eyes and keep them that way until it disappears.

sounds horrorfying and I would probally react in the same way as you. However I have had some weird vision issues due to answer including weird wavy lines in my vision.

Then it definitely was a scintillating scotoma. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scintillating_scotoma They have pictures on this page of the various common forms they can take. Such things are associated almost exclusively with migraine.
