Prozac (fluoxetine) users: headaches?
« on: June 03, 2014, 01:27:50 PM »
I've been taking 40mg of fluoxetine since feb and for the past month and half get headaches on and off all day. Doc thought maybe allergies so I've been taking Allegra but not helping. Anyone else encounter these headaches on prozac?

The serotonergic antidepressants can cause headaches. In addition to what it does in the brain, serotonin also regulates blood-vessel tone, contraction and dilation, and SSRIs can increase dilation which causes the headaches. However, this is usually an initial side-effect which diminishes after a few weeks. They don't normally begin months later. Has anything else changed recently? A new pillow, added stress, have you been prescribed a new med, or began taking a supplements, etc?

NOTE: I'm not a doctor, and particularly not yours, so there may be factors I'm unaware of. Therefore all advice is of a general nature and you should consult your doctor before following any of it, especially before changing med doses.
