Horizontal indentations in some of my fingernails
« on: June 01, 2014, 05:25:01 PM »
Is this something really bad?  I just noticed that there are horizontal indentations on 5 of my fingernails (a few on each hand, none on my toenails).  I can really see them unless I look at them from the side -- I only noticed because I felt them.

Has anyone else ever had this and had it be nothing?  Worried they're Beau's lines.  As far as I know, I don't have any of the conditions associated with Beau's lines.  Help?

FWIW, the indentations aren't super-obvious --- they're probably more on the subtle side

I get ridges on my nails and always have. It can be caused by a temporary nutritional deficiency of some sort, or it can even just reflect periods of high stress in your life. If you are otherwise not showing any severe problems with your health then you probably have nothing to worry about. If they are persistent and keep coming, then you might ask your doctor about them, but a few lines popping up is not that uncommon.

Toasted butter -- are you talking about vertical lines, ones that run the length of the nail, or horizontal ones?  I've had the vertical ones for years, and I know they're common.  I'm only worried about the ones that go across the nail.  Which ones do you have?

I've always had the vertical ones, but I get the horizontal ones occasionally too. Nothing too pronounced, but definitely visible. If you get them often then it could indicate a problem in your body, but to get them occasionally probably just means you have been stressed out, or have been sick, or might have had a nutrition deficiency of some sort.

Thanks!  Last question -- do you get them on more than one nail at a time?  Right now I think I have 5

They can signal anemia or hypothyroidism. The ridges are anemia, also.

Yeah, usually I will get them on at least a few at the exact same time. The first time I remember getting them was when I was a kid (like 12 or so) and I had them on three different fingers, all of them looked like the same pattern of lines. Usually they aren't that noticeable, but that one time they were pretty pronounced.

The horizontal dents aren't actually lines, and there's only one per finger.

I can only see them when I look closely and at the right angle and in the right light.  I can feel them better than I can see them.

You know, about 2.5 months ago I was really sick with a nasty virus.   At the time, I said it felt like I was the sickest I'd been in my entire adult life.  It was nothing horribly serious -- just a bad sore throat, aches, headache, which turned into a sinus infection that I had to take antibiotics to get rid of.  I never had much a a fever though, but I'm not sure if that matters.

Given that the dents are halfway down my fingernails at this point (indicating something that happened a while back), I wonder if that illness could have been the cause?

Anyone else have experience with this?

That sounds very likely. The single indentation indicates a single instance of stress on your body. The ridges will probably grow off in a month or two and that will be that; they're like a temporary scar telling you that something very stressful happened at that point. You now have a clear idea of what that event probably was.
