Serious Amputation Fear
« on: June 01, 2014, 02:34:28 AM »
Hey guys,

So recently I've developed an intense fear of losing my limbs...
I've recently been feeling aching and slight numbness in my left arm. I've heard this may result from something such as a pinched nerve.
Now, my left leg is aching as well as a burning sensation. I fear something such as neuropathy or some sort of undiagnosed diabetes, and if this gets any further than I'll have to have my left limbs chopped off.
I was just at the doctor, so I don't know whether to rush back or relax... They didn't seem too concerned despite my worrying, just referring me to a back specialist.
I'm very worried. Does this just happen? I'm 18 by the way.. Thank you.

It happens, but not to healthy 18 year olds.

If you're frightened of diabetes the simplest solution is activity, exercise, and healthfulness.

Assuming this actually is undiagnosed diabetes, which is unlikely, diabetes can be controlled and limb amputation only occurs in serious, untreated cases. You would have a plethora of other symptoms before your limbs began necrotizing.

Thanks for the reply,
I'm a very stressful person so I haven't ruled out the fact that I could be extremely tense from anxiety. But it's only on my left side, and now my leg is burning and feels like I just ran a mile on it.. I've been fearing neuropathy or something. I've always had an intense fear of losing/losing control of limbs..

Someone once mentioned something about the right-brain having more GABA-receptors. I'm not too informed on what this means; essentially anxiety more often and more potently affects the left side of the body.

Another once said that psychological problems, such as anxiety, and neurological problems share the same pathways and can manifest similarly. I have personally experienced intense paresthesias from my anxiety. This is not an uncommon feeling at all, nor an uncommon fear.
