TSH level 8.6.....could that be the cause of my anxiety
« on: May 30, 2014, 04:18:57 PM »
I just got a call from my cardiologist's office with my blood work result.  Everything came back normal, however, my TSH was 8.6.  I have to go back to my GP and talk about that.

The cardiologist office said that could be the cause of my palpitations.  Any thoughts on whether this could be and does it contribute to anxiety?

How do they remedy an elevated thyroid count?

8.6 is actually a fairly elevated TSH level.  The simple solution is Synthroid tablets.  (or the generic equivalent).  Yes, this level of TSH can cause a lot of anxiety.  Mine was 5.6 and my anxiety was very, very bad at that level.

The pills are inexpensive, and cause little to no side effects at all.  You will need blood tests every few months until your levels come back to normal, but you'll likely be on the meds for life.  Welcome to the club.  It's better on the other side.

You are VERY hypothyroid at that tsh, and yes that can cause ANXIETY.  Big time.  The medicine should help you a lot.  Check out Thyroid Sexy on *****.  Also STop the Thryoid Madness.

This might solve a mystery on how I've been feeling.  It's funny, though, because I had my blood tested 1 1/2 years ago and I think it was 4.65.  I can't believe it jumped so high.

My anxiety, though, has been through the roof for the past couple of weeks and heart palpitations galore.  The cardiologist thinks that may be causing them.

I hope it's just a matter of medicine to fix that and nothing else is seriously wrong and causing that.  I googled and of course, thyroid cancer pops up.

Did you have a full panel done?

TSH
T4 Total
Free T4
T3 Free
Thyroid Peroxidase (Antibodies)

This will give a better idea if you haven't had all yet.

I haven't seen the results yet.  My cardiologist called today to let me know my blood test results and said my thyroid TSH was 8.6.  I know the script mentioned T3 and T4 and something else.  They are going to mail a copy to me.

If I didn't have all of that, is that something I need to have done?  I'll know more when I get the results in the mail next week.

I would follow up with your GP and see what they say. Most the time when you get a standard thyroid test they don't do a full panel. I would specially ask for that panel mentioned. Thyroid isn't always black and white, and truly isn't a hard issue if you do end up with a thyroid issue. It can certainly be why you are feeling anxious.
