Worried I have Pancreatic Cancer.
« on: May 21, 2014, 10:35:09 PM »
So a little background before saying what "symptoms" I have. When I was about 16 or so I had a bad case of Pancreatitus that lasted about 2 months, I was stuck in a hospital with it and treated for it. They eventually took out my Gallbladder and aside from a few boughts of pain every once in a blue moon that never happened again.

I was told in the hospital I would most likely get Diabetes no matter what I did, years later here I am a Diabetic. Unfortunately due to my current financial and living situation I havent been able to take care of myself very well, as it stand I have a charity thing to get my insulin. So sadly my sugar isnt in as in check as I'd like or it should be.

Moving on to the last month or so I've been having pains in and around the area I remember having Pancreatitus when I got it when I was younger(Im 23 now.), though not nearly as severe. The pain is abit worse in my chest, right side. If you use the nipple as a reference point it's not even an inch left, and then up another half an inch. Also under my arm and my upper back area.

None of this pain is really terrible, but it's there. On a scale of 1-10 Id put it at a 2 or a 3 at the worst. I havent been getting sick, it doesnt hurt to eat, and I've been able to keep my food down. I havent had any jaundice or anything like that, and aside from staying up being worried I havent been fatigued as far as I can tell.

I did go to the doctor the other day, he didnt laugh it off as crazy when I mentioned it but he didnt seem to think it was anything like that. He said if it were the case Id have much more serious symptoms, especially after waiting a month. But he wanted me to go for a chest X-Ray to see what was going on.

Even after all that though Im really paranoid, especially after he flat out told me most people diagnosed with it die within six months. I appreciate the bluntness but at the same time not the most calming thing..

I understand noone can just tell me "Eh, you'll be fine", but Im hoping someone MIGHT be able to put my mind at ease a bit.

I'm sorry about your financial situation, and hope that improves.

Now, for the right-sided pain.  I'll save you the many hours of looking at what Dr. Google has to say about it, and say this: it is very common, for people who have had their gallbladders removed and for those who have not.  These people (I was one) run from specialist to specialist trying to find out what's up; an they read and post on forums everywhere.  Those who eventually rid themselves of this problem come to realize it is anxiety and chronic stress. It sounds like you have an overload of that right now.  What is happening?  Because everything is connected, your upper back muscles are responding to stress and tightening and pulling the muscles and nerves on your side and front as well. This is part of the "flight or fight" reflex, which is well known, and would be worth your looking up.

That said, if you can get a check up, imaging and blood tests will tell you how your pancreas is doing, quickly. I highly doubt you have any trouble there.  Your doctor, however, is right.

You can do a search through this site about right-sided pain, or even left-sided pain, and you will find many entries.

Try to learn how to get anxiety in check and practice relaxation and be active in trying to solve some of the tough problems you're saddled with now, and I think you will find improvement.

I'm no doc, but I've had the famous right-sided pain.  Ain't fun.

Thanks a lot for the quick response. I wont go into detail about all my stress but I suppose it has a lot to do with looking for a job, getting my GED, trying to move out of my parents. Stuff that Ive been having trouble with for years for differing reasons.

Ive read a lot about how Stress can do that to your body, but as a hypochondriac I cant simply take the simplest and most logical conclusion, no, I have to jump to the worst.

Anyways, I had blood work and such done while I was getting checked on at the doctor so hopefully that comes back with something, or rather, hopefully nothing I suppose. I feel a little better now, but I'll feel a lot better once I get word from them.

Im currently afraid of having PC or Chronic Pancreatitis

I always here ppl say pancreatitis pain can be in the front and feel like it's in your back/shoulder vlades

Is this pain muscular, like can you feel it or apply pressure to it, or is it a pain that you cant touch like it's internal?

Also how are your stools?

The best thing to do is have lowfat diet and low refined carbs as a lifestyle not to add extra stress to the pancreas

Best wishes, I wish these things werent possible to happen :'(

Cimyr, you poor thing... HA is a hassle --I know after having it 25 years.  First of all, there are something like 13 million Americans with diabetes, and of those, few ever develop PC.  My uncle (he's 82), my brother in law and my mother in law (all over 50) are severe diabetics and not one has ever had PC.  Your doctor will run a blood panel and if he sees anything worrisome, he'll test further.  Also, I read that PC is a fairly easy cancer to treat if caught early. Because you are hyper vigilant, IF you had it (YOU DONT), you'd catch it early. I don't know if you're a spiritual person, but you're in my prayers that you find yourself in a better place a month from now; you'll be fine.  God bless!

Im not much a spiritual guy but I really appreciate the prayers and all the kind words. Much like everything else with me Im sure as long as my blood test comes back normal in a week or so I'll be on to a new problem and this will be a thing of the past. Thank you again for your prayers.

Well, my stools are fine. No blood or anything and they're normal. No pain when I use the bathroom and urine is a normal color, or well, colorless(I drink a lot of water. Doctor said that isnt too uncommon). As for where the pain is, it seems to be more of an internal pain, I think. It doesnt hurt when I stretch, or take a breath, or press anywhere on my chest, side, or back.

And with the first attack was the pain also internal? Like those inyernal itches where you can't scratch it?

Also do you know what led to the first attack? Like were you a drinker?

O and I believe it'll be nothing

Try a water fast for 2 or 3days and see if it blows over

Also flex your abs and search for tender spots to see if it's a sore muscle or trigger point in your abs.
.Best wishes to you man

I have the same exact pain. It's so scary. It always happens at night and i feel it in chest and in my upper back on my right side in my shoulder blade area. I'm 27 and I do have my gallbladder. I have had 4 pregnancies. I am terrified of pancreatic cancer. The pain happens about once every 4 to 6 weeks. What's weird is anti acids like TUMS knock it out very fast. I have had this pain for about 5 years but it's been more often for about 15 months. I'm a HUGE hypochondriac. I had an EGD and colonoscopy in April and all was normal. I also had blood work in April and that was normal. I don't think they tested pancreas function but my liver blood work was totally normal. I can't stop thinking this pain is pancreas however it seems in a weird spot for pancreas. I thought pancreas pain would be mid abdomen and back because of its location. I also thought it sat more to the left side right below the last rib? My pain is totally upper right and in my chest. The back pain is far right up high in my shoulder blade area. My Gastro recommended a CT of my abdominal and pelvis for a work up area but I am way to scared. Medical tests cause me anxiety that is so bad I can't enjoy living until I have results. What did your pancritis pain feel like?

So of course I had to look. 2 different sources said pancreatic pain is most often felt on the left side of the abdominal area and can radiate into the left shoulder blade. It can also be felt mid abdomen. Gallbladder is felt on the right side. Maybe that's why you felt a similar pain when you were hospitalized? Possibly your gallbladder caused your pancreas infection which is extremely common.

Pancreatic cancer is awful. My bfs mom was diagnosed as stage 1 back in November and as of February she's stage 4 terminal. I don't mean to scare you but if you think even in the slightest bit that you may have it go get checked out. It can be treated if caught early and taken care of properly (the drs were idiots in her case, they only removed the tumour, not the surrounding tissue. And opening her up let oxygen into the cancer cells to allow them to grow & metastasize) . I'm fairly certain you don't have it but go get checked just in case. I wouldn't want this to happen to anyone else. Best of luck to you, I'm positive you'll be alright :)

In 3 months she went to stage 4? Was she ever stage 1 to begin with? Maybe they made a mistake and it was stage 2or 3

Also I thought cancer was anaerobic and couldnt live in oxygen?

It was stage 1 when first diagnosed. Her prognoses was great but they left some cancer cells behind and untreated, within that short amount of time it spread to her liver and lungs. And no, oxidization can create free radicals that break down healthy cell structures, damaging the DNA and promoting the development of cancer. The more free radicals present, the more cancer causing damage occurs. Kind of like when you cut into an Apple or a banana and the sugar reacts with the oxygen, causing that brown discolouration.

Oh yea, I forgot that other cells would be exposed to oxygen as well

sucks :(
