Lump under tongue
« on: May 19, 2014, 01:52:36 PM »
So recently I ran my tongue at the fleshy but just behind my bottom teeth and I ran over what felt like a lump. It feels slightly hard but I'm not sure. Any ideas what it could be? I might have had it for year but recently my HA has been so bad I worry over the tiniest things!!

The inside of the mouth (and especially under the tongue) is a clutter of bumps, ridges, discolorations and weird looking things. Most dentists do an "oral health exam", so if you're truly worried, call your dentist and tell the receptionist, "I feel a lump under my tongue and I'd like to see the doctor".  A dentist will know precisely what to look for, and will quickly put your mind at ease.  Also, the inside of the mouth is very sensitive, so you could have an irritated area (this often happens to me if I eat popcorn, or anything that is very crunchy like granola, chips, etc.).  God Bless.

This is so weird I literally just noticed this too a few days ago but mine hurts if I push down on it. I've left it alone and it's gone down

It's probably a) an irritation from eating something that cut the inside of your mouth or b) a slightly swollen area from a minor infection (or piece of food stuck in there).  If it's going down, just leave it alone... you can always see the dentist if you need to.  Be well!

I have a pair of lumps in that area, which I have just discovered!  Gums are lumpy things; I don't think we need to worry too much.

I get them sporadically - usually just a swollen saliva gland.  They go away and are harmless.

It could also be a mucocele which is a benign bump usually caused from some minor injury.  I get one on the side of my mouth several times a week from biting my cheek while sleeping with a nightguard.  I've had them behind my teeth and doc figured it was a chip or other hard food that caused a minor injury. Anyhow, it finally went away on it's own. They can be huge in children who bite or bump their mouth.

A dentist or an ENT physician will know right away. Odds are it is nothing.

Thanks for all the replies!!! It's very sore today as I was poking at it all yesterday (not a brilliant idea!!!) but I'm expecting it to be a swollen saliva gland or something. It's annoying also as I started to feel that my HA was dying down a bit and now I'm back to square one, awful.

Sorry for the teeth in this picture that I uploaded (waiting to be approved by moderators) but the arrow shows where I'm feeling the lump.

I noticed something similar a while back too. It's on the right side and I can feel it when i push it up against my lower gum with my tongue. I'm not sure what to make of it. Was thinking it feels like a collection of veins or something. I've been meaning to go dentist for a while, now I really must go!

Exactly what mines is!! If I push my tongue against the bit under the tongue I can feel it!! I think it has suddenly just popped up so does it sound anything sinister like cancer? I'm also 14 years old so does it seem likely to be anything bad???

Could be a torus. This is just a bony outgrowth. Sometimes, they develop from clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth in your sleep. Totally benign.

Could be that as I clench my jaw a lot!! But it's strange because it feels like a lump with my tongue but if I feel it with my finger it just feels fleshy?! Strange, might wait a week and see what happens,if it doesn't get better will go to the denist.
