So I got some water up my nose in the shower this morning
« on: May 16, 2014, 01:41:13 PM »
I'm doing my best, trying not to freak out. Water got in my nose this morning. Not WAY up there in the sinuses where it would burn, but definitely inside my nose. We're on well water at our house, but it's treated (hopefully properly!). I keep trying to rationalize to myself that water has to get WAY up your nose to contract N. Fowleri, right? Logically I know the odds are small, but I'm still fighting the urge to panic. Ugh.

Anyway, I've blown my nose about a dozen times this morning. Words of wisdom....again? Anyone?

Unless your shower is in a lake, pond, or puddle, you are fine.

To elaborate on what threnners said...unless you bathe in a hot stagnant lake or pond in the deep south there is no chance you have been exposed.  I grew up swimming in lakes and rivers in both Europe and New York and I am still here.  This is an anxiety driven irrational fear.  Treat the anxiety and the fear will go away in time.

I never heard of N. Fowleri before coming to this site.  Between 2000-2010 there were only 32 reported cases in the US per Wiki.  Im sure you have a better chance of winning Powerball than getting infected.

I know the odds. I have a better chance at having a brain tumor (my current obsession before this morning) then contracting N. Fowleri.

I will say this though - the past few hours has been a nice break from the brain tumor worry
