slective hearing
« on: May 09, 2014, 09:09:55 PM »
Has anyone else noticed while sitting in an doctor's office or a public place minding your business, where other people are conversing, and all of a sudden you hear the word cancer, diabetes, etc.. Like this blah, blah, blah, blah, cancer, blah, blah, blah, diabetes. Now you don't hear any other words but the ones you fear. I have done this so many times and will have a panic attack right then and there.  :dazed:  ;*)

I think in such places we are listening and waiting to hear such words. We may not think we are. But if we sit next to a person we wonder what is wrong with them. Is it anything we can catch. I am sure loads of people would do this. If they hear the wrong words mentioned the mind will take off with its own thoughts. I would class it as normal for a person with anxiety to do such a thing.

Oh that's so funny!  I am afraid of throwing up and if I am out somewhere in a restaurant, anyplace where there is just a drone of voices and noises, there'll be a single voice that booms out above the cacophony, "Yea, she was throwing up all night".  I'm not even thinking about it, wasn't listening for it, but it just somehow breaks through a barrier!  I think we have some kind of radar to zone into our fears.    I guess it's on the same principle of in that same situation we would hear our own name.

When anyone hears the word cancer, they take notice.
