Stomach virus... any advice? :(
« on: April 20, 2014, 11:48:34 AM »
So I woke up at 3 am feeling nauseous and had diarrhea and dry heaved. Shortly after, I threw up. I've thrown up 3 separate times (more than once while at the toilet at a time, though). I'm very thirsty and just want to drink so much, but I'm afraid that will make me throw up again. Any advice? How long will this last? Any experiences with this?

I never get stomach viruses, so I don't know why this is happening! I also am going to have to skip my Prozac today, because that might make me feel worse. Maybe that has weakened my immune system? Last Tuesday a coworker went home sick because he threw up, but I'm not sure if it's from that since that was 5 days ago. I have a vomit phobia, so this is really hard for me.

I would just appreciate any advice or stories, and how long this may stick around.

Sip some room temp water slowly.  Most bugs usually last around 24 hours or so.  You don't want anything in your stomach until you're sure it can handle it…toast, rice, easy to digest stuff.

How were your scans??  I didn't see an update.

Do you think it's ok to drink Gatorade? I'm so thirsty and have been eating ice and want to drink this Gatorade. I hope this goes away soon... :(

My second MRI with contrast of my brain and ear canals came back normal! I just accepted that I have very bizarre phenomenons (I still have all those symptoms even though I'm not anxious), so who knows!

If you think your stomach can handle it, you can try Gatorade. Like soaringfalcon said, just take small, slow sips. These bugs can be miserable, but luckily they only last about 24 hrs. Feel better!

Thank you! I hope this only lasts a day.  :sick0002: I read that it can last up to 10 days!

SO many people have a stomach virus right now.  They can last a while but usually only a day or two with the vomiting; diarrhea can last longer.  Gatorade is good, stay hydrated.

My family and I just recently went through this stomach virus...It was truly miserable...Honestly if you are thirsty (which I know just how thirsty you are rite now)...DRINK...your body needs it and its screaming for it....Even if it does cause you to vomit again, at least there will be something in your stomach to throw up...anything is better then a totally empty stomach and dry heaves which will make you feel even worse...All of us here were past the vomiting in the first 12 hours...the diarrhea took a few days later to let up....

Just rest and stay hydrated...Water and Gatorade are the best but you can also try some room temp Ginger Ale also...When you do start feeling like trying to eat a little bit...take it very very slow...Start with easy to digest foods like crackers, toast, fruit like pears and applesauce, even yogurt to replace some of the good bacteria....but stay away from meats, milk, cheeses, orange juice (anything acidic like oranges or tomato sauce)..or anything fried...It took all of us nearly a week to work back up to our normal diets.

Hope you are well soon

Take care

If I haven't thrown up for 6 1/2 hours, is it likely that I will again?

That sounds like you're done to my in my experience with stomach viruses.  Usually in my experience they keep going until they're done without "breaks."  Just don't eat/drink too fast or anything too heavy.  Feel better!

So glad your scans were clear.  The body aches are from being dehydrated.  Gatorade would be great, just make sure it's not ice cold.

I'm drinking gatorade and water and I'm so tired because I only got 2 hours of sleep last night before I woke up sick. I just hope I don't throw up again! Last time was 11 hours ago.

I have a big vomit phobia too - so I understand :-/

I had a stomach virus about 3 weeks ago, horrible diarrhea and I threw up (one time) ... but still, I was a mess.

If it's been 11 hours I would say you're in the clear, just take it very slow. I started sipping water and ate a banana, waited an hour or so and if I was still hungry I had some toast. The next day I took it very easy on the food and by the next evening I was back to normal.

Well it's been 24 hours since I last vomited but I woke up and had diarrhea still! So now I'm freaking out again.
