I posted a week ago. I started spotting on the 18th day of my cycle which has never happened before- so that was off i ususlly have my period 28 days or later.. Went for a pap 5 days later and it was normal.then my real period began- it lasted a full 3 days and now has been tapering to slight brown spotting- from the beginning of this period I am now on day 13 which isnt overly long for me.

I called my pcp today and she still feels that this weird period is due to my age with hormones and normal changes-- I am almost 42.

BUT in my anxiety this morning  I made an appointment with the gynecologist - and now I learned that it is for an ultrasound too.

Now I am completely scared- I mean part of me is like good the gynecologist is the expert in this topic but part of me just wants to cancel and just go with my pcp who has known me for 7 years.
what do I do I am a nervous wreck?

Def go with the gynecologist as they are the specialists! Also, I'm going thru this SAME thing!! I'm 36. I've been having mid cycle spotting for a while. First thing they did was send me for an U/S. Then MRI, then endo biopsy. Friday's follow up U/S lead the radiologist to believe I have endometriosis and polyps - that would explain the spotting. Meeting with my OB tomorrow to see what we do now, laparoscopic procedure is prob next. Aggghhh - I know what you're going thru!!

I think it's hormones too - I wouldn't be too concerned.  My first weird period was in 2003 at age 45 (and don't forget some people are younger, some older when they start peri) - My first weirdness was a period that was normal for 3 days, then the brown spotting until day 9... on day 9 ANOTHER period started and lasted for about 4 days.   I had MANY weird cycles until my period finally stopped in 2011.  I never went to get checked on any of them though.  I'd have my yearly exams in April and I'd just go in April.   It really is just hormones (unless of course you are having pain, then it could be some fibroids which are really common at this stage of the game)
I'd just keep the gyno appointment, if you don't go you will continue to worry.

Oh my --I know deep down the only way to get rid of this fear or nagging worry is to go to the gynecologist tomorrow. Im so scared- I had an ultrasound in july 2013 which was normal --- but I am petrified this time and I have to go alone too-  not that having someone there with me would lessen my panic or results---- ugh I hate anxiety-- it ruins so much.
Weird periods could go on for years if this is perimenooause--- how do you not worry yourself to death if there are so many weird changes?
Thank you for your feedback all.

It's common to spot during mid-cycle. I'm 42 and while I don't spot, my mid cycle is almost as bad as my regular period. My gyn always does an ultrasound to check everything. So far no problems!

If your ultrasound was good in 2013 there's no reason it should be bad less than a year later!
I didn't worry about the weird periods because I just assumed it was the start of menopause.  And I figured that if I had a pap and exam in April and had a weird period in October that it couldn't possibly be anything because he'd have SEEN something.  You don't start getting bad symptoms like that until a tumor is fairly large already.

All normal!!!  I went through all of this in my 40's.... and they always send you for ultrasounds just to be sure, but this is all normal.

Here's how my doctor described it:  when you're in perimenopause, it's like a plane landing at an airport.  You don't just drop from 22,000 feet to the runway -- you go through a gradual descent.  And when you go through the clouds, there's bound to be bumpiness from time to time... ie, irregularities in your cycle, etc.  Get 'em checked out, but really, it's just a natural part of the process.

Good luck and don't worry.  Happy landing, lol.

Ok I am back and feeling relieved. I had to do the internal pelvic ultrasound because I hadn't drank enough water- the tech said you don't have to do it if u r uncomfortable but I said no I'm here now let's just do it.
The tech was nice and said I could look on the screen and she described what she was seeing. The only thing that panicked me more was- the tech said "well if the dr needs to do a biopsy your lining is thin now. Ugh- so that panicked me- then I waited in the waiting room and then I waited for her.
The second thing that scared me was the nurse who brought me back to do the vitals - prepared this tray with cotton swabs - specimen cups- and other wrapped tools.
The dr came in and stated " well first I want to say that your ultrasound is completely normal. The ovaries look good- the uterine lining-- etc." I literally said "thank you Jesus"
The dr feels it's just "changes" and also could be thyroid level.
She didn't need to do any biopsies or additional tests.
Thank you all so much!
Between you all and this doctor I am feeling better about my bodies changes.
Also if any of you need to do a pelvic internal ultrasound - it doesn't hurt at all and I am not brave and I am very shy- I just wanted you to know that the thought of this is worse than the actual ultrasound.

I just went thru this last month. I got my period and lasted 16 days.... it was mainly spotting, no heavy like it usually is. I usually get a heavy period for the first 3 days and it lasts for 7 days. This time was spotting for 16 days.... I was very scared.... They sent me for u/s that found 3 benign cysts in my left ovary. The did bloodwork for hormones and that was all ok. I am 37. I just got my period on Tuesday 2 days earlier BUT it's looking like a normal period no spotting, so I hope this time is ok. I am not scared of the cysts, I had them before and they go away on their own.
Good luck!
