Colonoscopy or flex sig!! Why did you have one?
« on: April 10, 2014, 02:28:37 PM »
I finally got the courage to schedule a flex sig for April 21. I'm absolutely terrified of what they might find. I have intermittent light bright red rectal bleeding (streaks on stool and TP) and have for 15 months mostly with hard stool and once with a bad dirreah stomach flu. I have no other symptoms of CC or rectal cancer but I am terrified. I'm 26 and don't want bad news. I feel like I might cancel this appointment. My GI offered this to ease my mind but I feel even more terrified now than I ever have and that is saying a lot.
Please tell me why you had one and what your findings were.
Also my 2 year old always has right red blood on his stools from fissures but I'm worried he could have something terrible too.

Hopefully this will put your mind at ease: bright red blood is usually hemorrhoids. I had a colonoscopy about 6 years ago at age 29 because I stopped having normal bms and started to be only able to pass mucus or blood. Gross I know. I was terrified and sure I had colon cancer. Turns out a had an ulcer in my colon. I have no idea why. Fast forward to last Fall, I started to have bright red blood occasionally with my bowel movements after I went for a run. I had another colonoscopy and the doctor found absolutely nothing, not even hemorrhoids. No idea why the bright red blood, but there you go. I'm fine. I hope this helps... I've never heard of bright red blood meaning colon cancer. ((hugs))

I had a colonoscopy 5 years ago at age 30 due to months of stomach issues. It took me literally 6 months to get the courage to make an appt with a GI doctor because I was so scared I had cc. It was a terrible 6 months of worrying, but the actual procedure was so easy and put my mind totally at ease and I was diagnosed with IBS. I finally felt as though I could start living again once I got the clear that all was ok.
I would suggest to just go through with it because I am sure everything will be fine. You will feel so much more at ease. The most common cause of rectal bleeding are hemorrhoids; they are so common!

Thanks for the stories. I'm actually having an anxiety attack as I type this because I googled again and always go back to this one thread which is full of people who were diagnosised in their 20s and some even passed away. I can't stop crying, I'm shaking and it's hard to catch my breath. I haven't had any bleeding in a while (maybe I small vein like streak when I checked with my flash light a couple weeks ago) but going #2 has controlled my life. This fear or should I say phobia as been dibilitating to me. I am keeping my appointment I just need to learn to cope until it gets here.
