SHORTNESS OF BREATH ALL DAY EVERY DAY?
« on: April 09, 2014, 01:08:20 PM »
Im 23 year male and very healthy life style and don't smoke. All day I get shortness of breath where breath doesn't go all the way down. It seems to go away when I eat like crazy as in full my stomach.EVEN WHEN IM NOT HUNGRY I EAT FOR NO REASON WHICH IS RUNING MY DIET I did a surgrey tummy tuck 2012 and it kidna started from there but has gotten worse. Checked with surgeon and it had nothing to do with surgery he said. Can it be anxiety. Got a chest and lat xray showed no lung problem and checked oxygen which was normal doctor said... I have a over thinking problem where I think all day non stop worrying about things? any ideas?

When I focus on my breathing I get short of breath as well.  You're probably hypersensitive to your own breathing.

When I am anxious, I definitely take shallower breaths. Not sure why it happens, but
It is a hallmark of anxiety.

I had this ALL day, every day for four years! I was constantly aware of my breathing and always short of breath, it was pure misery. I even convinced myself that I had some horrible disease because of it but no....turns out it was purely anxiety driven and once I started therapy for my anxiety it completely went away.

Despite all that, to this day if I'm really anxious that symptom will come out. I find if I actively ignore it it will eventually go away. The more I think about it the worse it gets.

Is it where you feel like you're never taking a full breath, no matter how deeply you breathe? I have that too, right now in fact, and I find I'm having to yawn all the time to get a full breath in. It's horrible, because it does make you panic and think 'what if I have this or that respiratory problem?', but when the doctor listened to my chest a few weeks ago he said there was nothing. I can feel mucus on my chest, though, so I'm wondering if my chest infection from earlier in the year has come back and is exacerbating the issue.

It is really, really horrible so I do sympathise with how you're feeling. You always worry in case you can't breath in enough oxygen, which can make you panic. But I am resigned to the fact that it is probably anxiety-based. :( Maybe it is time for both of us to get some therapy? We can't keep living like this.

i can relate to this... i've had 2 ECGs, an electrocardio, a spirometry test, chest xray, stress test and a holter monitoring and everything came in just fine. i asked the doctor what's wrong with me and he said NOTHING! but why do i still feel like i can't breathe? I having this choking sensation/feeling that worsens when i am full or when i am eating. i also have this lump in my throat since November 2013 but i already went to the doctor and did an endoscopy and nothing is wrong with me. i even came to a point wherein i would count my breaths per minute.  :dazed:

Hi hon someone gave me this advise on the breathlessness. Apparently it's sometimes known as 'air hunger':

It often results through over breathing (consciously trying to control the air intake) and without realising it, your oxygen levels in your blood are higher than normal. (Perfectly harmless but uncomfortable feeling).

It's difficult at first, but you need to rebalance the blood gases. And ultimately allow your automatic system to re take control of your breathing. (If you imagine this same system controls breathing whilst you sleep, and needs to do the same when you are awake) otherwise things go askew.

The following technique is often helpful.

Take a short breath in through the nose for 3-4 seconds and breath out through pursed lips for 7-8 seconds, continue until your breathing relaxes.

If you find it too difficult to breath out for any length of time shorten the timing at first. Provided the breath out is longer than the breath in.

(You are trying to rebalance oxygen and carbon dioxide ) - if it gets really bad, try breathing through cupped hands (think of the old paper bad method used in severe hyperventilating )
