To What Level Can We Really Somatisize?
« on: April 06, 2014, 09:11:38 PM »
"What we think about, we bring about." This is especially true for hypochondriacs like me, but to what degree? If you could tell me that I can create this tingling by thinking about tingling, or cause muscle twitching by stressing about muscle twitching, it'd be a huge relief. I worry though, a lot of non-hypochondriacs say that stress can't cause these things. That only certain things can be caused by stress and only to certain degrees.

So, where is the line drawn? If I think about my eyes hurting, I can make them hurt. Or did they always hurt and now I'm just noticing it? That's the type of question in posing.

Looking for lots of opinions on this thread so please share your opinion.

It's impossible to really grasp what stress can do to a body until you've lived it.  I'm pretty sure even if non-hypochondriacs experienced what I do when I'm freaking out, they'd be worried!  But no cause is usually found for my symptoms, and once I stop worrying, most of them go away.

I'd like to know this myself.

Personally, in my own body, I do find it ironic that whatever area I'm worried about at the time seems to be the area that gets symptoms.  I think a lot of it comes down to hyper-awareness.  Taking your example of tingling, I never notice any at all (except at appropriate yoga moments), but I held my hand out and concentrated and some tingling came on.  Is the tingling always there, but extremely vague, or did I cause it?  The brain works in mysterious ways.

As a heart worrier, I can tell you with 100% certainty that I can be sitting there feeling absolutely fine and if I allow myself to start worrying, my body will begin to manifest all the symptoms of a heart attack.

When I was tiny, I overheard my mom describing someone's stroke symptoms.  Guess what symptoms I immediately developed?  That's actually when I first developed anxiety-based tingling, and I remember it clearly.

I hate it when people start telling me in detail about their stomach viruses or food poisoning!!  I'm an emetophobe and when people start telling me things, my stomach starts getting heavy, then I start getting nauseated, and for some reason my ears get hot!  I end up feeling horrible.

I wish there was a way to tell the difference!  Sometimes I get scared to think about symptoms because then I might get them soon and I can't tell if my thinking caused it or if it's real.

Check out conversion disorder. People can have seizures or other demonstrable neurological manifestations for psychological reasons.

So to answer your question, people can somaticize to a tremendous degree.

Women's abdomens can blow up just like they are pregnant if they believe they are strong enough.  Your mind can create blindness, a foot drop...just about anything under the sun.

I would put the rate at 100%.  We *all* experience symptoms (real or imagined) of the illnesses we fear.  There are many, many reports of symptoms vanishing as soon as a Dr or yes confirms the disease is not present.  Our minds are extremely powerful.

I would guess 99.9999%  just because I can be disagreeable :)
