Worried because I was born premature
« on: March 29, 2014, 06:58:40 PM »
I did a stupid thing yesterday and Googled if being a premie has issues later in life. I read an article that said premature young adults have a 30% higher risk of dying in their 20s and 30s compared to others. It's still low for it to happen but..

Ugh, I got worried. I was 3 months premature, had a clubbed foot, and at age 8 I had surgery to stop scolosis from getting worse. I've had hypothyroidism, I'm asthmatic, I've had arthritis since elementary, and my doctor thinks I have PCOS. I feel like a walking time bomb now. Who knows if I'll get diagnosed with something new or something else will go wrong.

My grandpa was a premee too and he's almost 70 and relatively fine. But then again he is healthier than me. He doesn't have asthma or anything, just a few injuries due to accidents.

Numbers need context to have meaning. It said "30%" ... but what is the base figure? Whats the rate of death in those two decades for non-premature, compared to other ages? Does it take into account things like alcohol or car crashes, or simply from problems caused by being premature? 30% could be virtually nothing, or it could be extremely large, or it could be anywhere in the middle.

But without that base figure, the percentage itself is meaningless.

There are so many variables that go into those sort of studies that are SO hard to control, and essentially the number they come out with is meaningless.

Lunatone is 100% correct.

If it helps, I was premature too! I am 27, and have always wondered if that would shorten my life expectancy. Reminds me of that movie final destination.

Regardless, I am in my twenties and just wanted to show my support as a fellow preemie! You aren't alone!
