2nd UTI in 2014. Scared of the meds
« on: March 27, 2014, 02:24:53 PM »
The first UTI they gave me Keflex which I've had many times. The second UTI, the dip stick said no infection and 5 days later they called to tell me the culture grew Klebsiella but in a small amount so put me on Cipro. By my 2nd dose I had 8 bouts of horrible diarrhea in 2 hours and hives.  They took me off that and put me on Suprax ($250). The culture showed those were the best for the bacteria I have.

First UTI's scare me, especially since a church friend died after one went to her blood stream (e coli) but also if I read the side effects of the medications, I start thinking I have all the side effects.

I've gotten to where I'm afraid of the medications!  I know they have to list everything that COULD happen but now I wonder if I should throw away or refuse the paperwork that tells you what the side effects are.

Just don't read the list of side effects unless you get one. Then, just check that it's on the list and just put it back away and move on.

Sometimes you have to jump around on antibiotics. It's unfortunate and unpleasant, but it's what has to be done to get you feeling better.

I've decided to do exactly what you said.  Yesterday developed a horrible itch and bright red crotch so my doc gave me a script for one pill.  I asked the pharmacist if I could eat yogurt and was there anything special I needed to know. She said 'nope' so that was it. I threw the paper away and didn't google.

I'm so sick and tired of being scared of everything!

I get UTI's often and I get false alarms often too (interstitial cystitis).

Take probiotics. I also take a supplement called D-Mannose that helps prevent them, especially if you are getting recurring ones.

Although UTI's can be serious if you don't treat them, in most cases there is nothing to worry about it is just unpleasant.

I use to get them a lot. However, I found that I can use the antibiotic Keflex and not have to switch anymore. Also, I use something called uristatin (herbs) and that helps and prevents!

I've had a lot of UTI's, last one was just a few weeks ago. One thing to do when you take antibiotics is, also take a probiotic. I like the Probiotic pearls. You can develop C-diff if the good bacteria isn't replaced. I also like picking up some $1 uti tests from the dollar store so I know whether to go to the doctor for certain symptoms. If you get yeast infections with antibiotics, ask for a diflucan pill.

Definitely take the antibiotics they give you, you don't want it developing into a kidney infection!

Best Wishes.

If you are getting them recurringly, cranberry might help. And take probiotics to avoid yeast infections. (But don't take them at the same time as your antibiotic. Take one in the morning and one in the evening).
