IBS .... Please answer!
« on: March 27, 2014, 10:01:20 AM »
Hello,

I have been experiencing some mild nausea on/off for a about a month. I have also had stomach grumbling and lots of gas for a while now ... again on and off. No D or C. Today I notice some stringy mucus in my BM. What could this be ???? I am freaking out. Does IBS cause mucus ? What else causes mucus ?

Yes, IBS can definitely cause mucus. Unless you have blood in your stool or really narrow stools consistently, or any other major red flags, it's probably IBS. Always check with your doctor if you're unsure, though :)

No I have never had narrow BM or blood at all. Also I don't always have the mucus and there aren't tons .. but I see them (stringy) when they are there. What can be causing this ??? I am really worried ....

Mucus in stool usually happens when stool travels too fast due to autonomic dysfunction. The autonomic nervous system tells the bowel to when to contract and push, called  peristaltic function. If the stool travels too fast the mucus is on it from the small intestine. ANother thing that can cause mucus is from hemorrhoids. Another thing is infection, like your typical gastroenteritis/stomach flu. Is the stool yellow? Undigested food in it? Are you having burning/itching/pain in rectum? Any new medications or diet change within the past month? Have you been on antibiotics from within the past 6 weeks? Do you chew gum or mints? Soda? Dairy?

Stool color is actually normal ... don't really see any undigested food except tomato skin ... SOMETIMES it itches but rarely ... no new meds .. I do drink some very little soda and I do drink milk.

You sound normal to me. Look up IBS on the internet, and it will say that mucus is normal. You don't have any red flags. The good thing about the bowel, is that there are so many things that can go wrong with it.
