Worried about mom!
« on: March 21, 2014, 09:52:33 PM »
Point blank, I am really worried about my mom now.  She has had lower back pain for the past 3 days now.  The first two days, she said that it seemed to be getting a little better, but I asked her today and she said it was horrible - worse than before.  I am completely terrified that she has some sort of tumor growing, or she has some form of cancer.  I am grilling her with questions and she just says "I'll be okay."  Now, someone like me won't take an answer like that...it worries me.

She just turned 56 in February which is why I'm worried - she's a little older.  She also said that it will travel down both of her legs as well.  I asked her if anything else was bothering her at the moment and so far she said no.  I even mentioned that she should go to the doctor and normally she just says "oh it's nothing" but this time she said "yeah, I'll see what happens."   :(

Lower back pain is one of the number one reasons people visit the Dr.  It's very, very common. Sounds like it might be sciatica since it travels down both legs.

I"m 58 with low back here.  Down the legs, mostly left.  MRI showed disc problems.
I have a stronger sympathy for those with back pains now.

Lower back pain that travels down the legs is almost certainly a sciatic problem that can be treated by a chiropractor.

Lower back pain is soooo common, especially in older women. Yes, a tumor could cause lower back pain, but there are way, way more reasons for back pain that are extremely more common albeit annoying.

One thing we have to remember with anxiety, is that it is OUR anxiety, not other people's, and we cannot project our worries onto them.

Well a little update, I asked my mom how her back was this morning and she said it was still bothering her a little, but it felt better.  I appreciate the responses though.  Does sciatica cause any other symptoms?  I ask because that's her only symptom right now is the back and leg pain.

I just worry because I hear stories about people like that who only have back pain, then they go to the doctor thinking it's something minor and they walk out with a serious problem.

Ughhh, she is being so stubborn.  She said that it's still bothering her, but it comes and goes.

I asked her exactly where it is, and it almost seems like it's where her pelvis is - underneath her back.  I keep telling her to go to the doctors and she said "if it gets worse, I'll go."  What am I suppose to do?  I want her to at least go but she won't.  I asked her if she has ever had this type of pain before and she said no.   :fragend005:

Try not to worry.  Your Mom knows her body and she knows how severe the pain is.  Don't reflect your anxiety on her :)

It is her body and pain to worry about. You must remember that. You cannot force your mom to go to the doctor's office against her will.

I know it's hard, but you have health anxiety - not her. Let her deal with it how she chooses.

Thank you for responding to my worries everyone.

Another little update...she took off of work for 1 week for vacation and she said that it is still there, but isn't as bad as before.  I keep telling her to go to the doctors.  I realize that it's her body and I can't make decisions for her - I just worry.  I have had my fair share of intense back pain but I'm more concerned with my mom because I know that it's my mind because it doesn't hurt when I don't focus on it.

However, my mom has back pain no matter what.

What kind of job does she have?  It is SO easy to hurt a back!  You can merely twist the "wrong" way.

Thank you for responding everyone...much appreciated

Another update, my mom said that her lower back pain is improving and it really doesn't bother her much.  However she said that her legs hurt today.  Also, when we were sitting in the family room, she said "why am I achy today?"  And I asked her where, she said "just my body."  Now, I'm thinking something sinister is going on.

So her back pain is pretty much gone, but the achy feeling is concerning to me now.   :(

Maybe she's coming down with a cold/flu?
You said she is 56 (I'm 55) and menopause wreaks HAVOC with your body!  Some days I feel achy like that and that IS a symptom of menopause.  (it's the kind of ache that I used to get in my legs before I'd get my period) SOMETIMES that same ache is in my arms.
