When do I know when to go to the hospital?
« on: March 16, 2014, 12:00:42 AM »
As I wrote before, over the last week and a half I've experienced occasional severe sharp pains, constipation, diarrhea, tenderness when I touch my lower right quadrant of my abdomen, lower back pain, and now a loss of appetite for about three days.

http://www.healthline.com/symptom/abdominal-tenderness

I read this, and it made it sound like I am experiencing an emergency. I have a doctor's appointment Monday morning (so close), and she's a great doctor. However, I am rather terrified that I might be experiencing something really serious and by the time I see her it might be too late. What if I'm really taking a huge risk by waiting? :(

Going to the hospital is a huge cost though... Should I go to the ER? I don't know what to do.

You don't need to go to the ER. That page is extremely vague on the symptoms. What you are experiencing right now as not cause for alarm. if it gets bad enough to require the ER, you will know right away. Because it will feel way worse than how you do right now.

Severe, sharp pains are never good. Tenderness/pain in the lower right quadrant could be related to appendicitis. Definitely not something to play with. Based on your symptoms it "could" be appendicitis. Better to be safe than sorry. Don't freak out and let your anxiety get the best of you, you're going to be fine. It may not even be appendicitis. Waiting until Monday is a risk, if the sharp severe pain worsens head to the ER.

I've thought of so many things it could be - ovarian cancer (I have all those symptoms), cancer of the colon, pancreas, or stomach. Pancreatitis(sp?), parasites, appendicitis,  bladder infection... (I have frequent urination too). It could be so many things. :(

Unless your "occasional sharp pain" becomes more constant, I think you can wait until tomorrow to see the doc - other than that none of the symptoms you list here seem to be cause for any immediate concern.

I agree, you can wait.  Sounds like IBS to me.  Gas can cause severe, sharp pain.

Appendicitis also presents with a fever and vomiting.

As others have said, if you need to go, you wouldn't be questioning it.
