Tao Te Ching - Legit Therapy Guide or what?
« on: March 12, 2014, 04:03:42 PM »
I'm not throwing this from a religious standpoint, as it is a religion known as Taoism, and that is pretty current (pretty current as in from the time this these proverbs were put together)

I feel that it is a more of a... Passive standpoint than really assertive. It, of course, plays in with the yin and the yang, the good and the bad... and wants you to kind of... not so much as into take control of your surroundings, but understand repercussions, cause and effect.

I was just curious as to if anybody in here has heard of, or has really followed much of it. It's not really a right or wrong answer, and to try and "understand" the reading per se isn't even really possible.

What's your take?

For instance, in Chapter 3:

Do not treasure goods that are hard to obtain
So the people will not become thieves
Do not show the desired things
So their hearts will not be confused

What's your take?

Depends on what you're looking for. It may be of value as a philosophy of life, but if you're looking for something to help with anxiety then check out mindfulness therapy.

But do you have any views on the Tao?

It is a metaphysical philosophy of life some elements of which exist in most societies. But it depends on what you read into it, the interpretations you assign, however, this is true of all religions.
