How Do You Figure Out Anxiety or Not
« on: March 11, 2014, 07:37:49 PM »
Hey

Ive been here off and on for the past 6 months. I struggle with physical symptoms daily but have had no answers from countless tests and specialists. My issue is not one dr has told me i have anxiety. They usually say "it doesn't really sound like anxiety" . So im asking what causing these if ive followed all your advice and tests. They respond by saying "this will probably pass eventually so lets wait and see".

So i ask for anxiety meds which i was given clonazepam.

Little background, i went through a huge health scare 8 months ago that was pretty traumatic to me but nothing ever came of it. All tests came non conclusive but i dealt with real physical symptoms that lasted to this day. Some of the things have gotten better but i still have symptoms. The clonazepam seems to help with most and actually got me back on my feet and able to live a semi normal life i use to have. It makes me feel better.

I never feel anxious though. No racing heart beat, no shakes, no agitation, not one panic attack. Just these symptoms and general unwell feeling.

I asked dr why none of the other drugs that specifically address the symptoms work but the benzo does, they always reply that it has some property in it that helps that particular symptom (for eg my neck/throat will tighten up and neck soreness) but apparently benzos have this property to help this but drugs that are made for it dont work?

Now im at a point where i feel im dependent on this benzo because nothing works. When i try stopping it i usually have the symptoms reappear and never can figure out if its rebound symptoms or something added.

If this is anxiety its not how i remember it. Use to perform in front of 10k people a night or speak in front of hundreds and that was the feeling of anxiousness i thought would be anxiety. But i dont experience that.

Dont want to be on a benzo to function daily but i feel getting off, everything i had before returns and yet i have no idea if i have anxiety. Kinda goes to the chicken or the egg theory.

Is there some self test i can do to pinpoint my problem is real or my mind.

I do feel my nerves were probably messed up from that day but i feel i have gotten better from that day with past symptoms but new ones arise which sounds like anxiety from the text book.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Oh no, no no!  The feeling you get before performing is NOT the same thing as a health anxiety thing!  It's 2 totally different things!  Let's say you were thinking you had a certain disease and the symptom was a tingling leg and bad pressure pain in your stomach.  Let's say you had the tingling leg and you started dwelling on the fact that you HAVE "that" certain disease.  You'd then keep thinking, "But my stomach is fine"  A few days later, "But I THINK my stomach is fine"  a week later, "Hmmm, I'm getting a little pressure right under the breast bone... oh no!  I AM getting that disease!"  Then you start dwelling on your stomach more and more.... you start pressing it, you stand in front of a mirror to see if you are having any bloating...  you eat and then concentrate to see if eating made that pressure worse...  in time you really DO get that pressure pain and it gets worse and worse, now you have yourself convinced you have "that" disease.  Then you start googling to see if there are any other symptoms of "that" disease, Ah ha!!  You find one lone site that says an aching jaw can be a symptom... in time you get the aching jaw...  that is what health anxiety is all about.

Hey sunlover

Thanks for the reply. That does sound kinda correlated with what happens with me but can you also get symptoms that you completly are unaware of any diseases. At first after my scare i developed a hazed vision for months but i didnt associate it with any disease. Just thought it was from the shock of the experience. Then developed chronic neck pain on one side that wasn't a typical neck pain like you would get from sports or overstraining. I couldnt associate any disease from that until yes i became e-retarded and googled neck pain. But my point is some are occuring without a initial concious thought of a symptom associated with current symptoms?

How does the cycle stop? Ive tried just telling myself this will pass but that just doesnt cut it

Thats interesting about being anxious and being completly calm. Ithink thats whats shrugged my drs away from saying anxietybecause when i present to them i seem fairly calm and normal, other than my symptom complaints.

We all will get REAL symptoms, 99.9% of those are things that happen to every human being for no reason or for some very benign reason.  THOSE symptoms set us off.  Just like I said in my previous post about a tingling leg being a symptom of disease "X" - the tingling leg could be from some pinched nerve, but then we keep going back to thinking about disease "X", then we look it up (or maybe we already KNOW the other symptoms of disease "X" from previous Googles or from someone we know who was diagnosed with disease "X"  and we see that disease "X" also presents itself with pressure pain in the stomach, THAT is when we start manufacturing pain that wouldn't have existed otherwise.  Then the tingling leg probably would have resolved itself but because we are already in that loop of worry then that tingling leg continues on longer than it would have because NOW we are manufacturing that.    No, the FIRST symptom isn't brain manufactured, but many times we get other ones that stem from that first one and the first one continues on and on due to that.

On the other hand of course, maybe someone will be getting headaches and pain in their jaw - that doesn't mean that either one are manufactured.  It could be TMJ, but the health anxiety person will worry it's something ELSE rather than the obvious.

As far as "how does this cycle stop?"  If only I knew...

Thanks.

It kinda leads in my mind that if you learn not to worry then when will you understand to really need to be worried or act upon something. Dr's dont know, we don't know. Bet insurances hate us hah
