Is this IBS or bowel cancer? (TMI)
« on: February 27, 2014, 06:08:41 AM »
Hey guys.

I have a rather embarrassing problem. This post will be pretty gross, so I apologise for that.

It's happened three times in the past six months. Basically, I've 'wet farted' or 'sharted'

The first time it happened was last August. I was under a lot of stress and anxiety at that time and well, it just happened. It didn't help my anxiety at all. I was scared for a long time then in September I saw my doctor who did a blood test which came back fine and formally diagnosed me with IBS. I accepted that because I always thought I had it because I've always had some kind of bowel problem, usually constipation and blood when I do go. Everything was alright then until last weekend where I was under anxiety and stress again (and just got my period) and I did it again. I freaked out but it calmed after a few days, but just a few minutes ago it happened again. I'm trying to remain calm this time. I googled the other day (stupidly) and something popped up about incontinence being caused by bowel cancer.. which is something I've feared for a few years. I'm really worried I've got it now and it's getting worse. I'm 19. I spoke to the doctor on the phone the other day who said my blood test would have shown something wrong - is that true? And he mentioned again about the IBS. I'm scared to pass wind now in case it happens again.

Some other things: I usually can go about a week without going to the loo, then I finally can go and the first movement is alright but then for maybe about 24/48 hours I usually get a bit of diarrhoea. I also get a lot of stomach pain and sulfur smelling burps which is absolutely awful.

This has happened to me a number if times and I have had colonoscopy's, EGD's, etc. with
no issues. I will tell you a funny story that happened to me. I was at a client one time and I
farted and water came out into my underwear. My underwear felt wet. I went into the mens
room and looked and bingo, bad news. I looked outside the mens room to make sure no one was
near and I took my underwear off (lucky they were black) and I began to scrum them in the sink
with soap and hot water. I was standing there with my pants, shoes and shirt on, scrubbing.
I did it pretty quickly and put my underwear under the hand dryer. I peeked a number of times
outside the door to make sure no one was coming while I was doing this because if anyone saw me
I would probably be locked up. Anyway the underwear finally dried, so I went back in the stall and
got them back on and all was good.

I have IBS and although I haven't had the same symptoms, I've had others that are scary including white mucous in my stool among other things.

You had a good work up with your Dr. and you should feel satisfied with that. It's not like he just passed you off - he actually did some tests to ensure nothing was wrong. If you are still concerned, however, I would recommend finding a GI specialist and see if you can have a colonoscopy done - that will be the best way to determine if something is going on within your bowels. Just a suggestion.

As for going days without going to the bathroom, then going and having a normal movement followed by diarrhea, that is classic IBS. I get that too, a lot. I take a strong probiotic daily which helps my bowel movements a lot.

Also, anxiety plays a role in your digestive health as the majority of seratonin is in your gut. Every time I get nervous/anxiety attack, I have loose stool.

I have diagnosed with IBS. And yes. Many times I didn't make it to the toilet. A few months ago I got food poisoning and my IBS now comes with constipation.

I've had a endo and a colonoscopy. Both fine. Anxiety makes IBS worse and your period can agro both IBS and Anxiety.

For the wet farts I suggest trying an elimination diet. I avoid foods that make me gassy such as cabbage, cheese, some beans. I also take a strong probiotic.

Thanks guys. Is my doctor right in saying that the blood test would have shown something up if anything was wrong?

I think this happens to many people, even those who don't have IBS.  Personally, it's happened to me 3 times in my life, for no particular reason.  It really freaks me out!  I also have IBS by the way.

I never know exactly why it happens, but unless it's happening regularly every day I would just assume it's IBS.  I'm sure stress and certain foods contribute.
