Neck ultrasound tomorrow - I'm terrified
« on: February 24, 2014, 10:15:15 AM »
So tomorrow I am going for a neck ultrasound. Have been having neck ache for a good few months and I also feel my ear sore and pressure in my throat all on right side.

I've seen my own gp several time who has said nothing but muscle tension. Saw ENT twice who scoped my throat and said all normal. Also examined my neck.

But still the ache exists so my gp said to go for an ultrasound to put my mind at rest as I keep going to see her despite her telling me it's all fine.

But I am convinced something really bad is going to show like cancer or bad swollen nodes even tho docs say no swollen nodes.

I just feel very worried that tomorrow is the day....x

Hi,

Thank you for your personal message, I am not able to respond to personal messages just yet.  My node was 3cm according to the ultra sound.  I am feeling better  and holding on to the fact that statistics are on my side. Acupuncture really helps with the anxiety and nodes can be swollen for soooo many reasons.  Try not to worry about the ultra sound too much. Usually if there is pain that is a good sign that your body is fighting an infection. I am anxious because mine is painless and seemed to have appeared for no reason. Keep me posted on the ultra sound today (deep breaths...and if possible don't look at the screen!) Doesn't help and you won't know how to read it!!

Thanks Worrywall

Does the node feel like 3 cm to you and is it easy to feel? I hate these tests. It's tomorrow I am going for it. Is it tomorrow for you too to see ENT?x

Hi,

Yes, it does feel a little large, its easy to feel and I can see the lump in the mirror.  I know, I hate going through tests also. Its really scary.  But know that statistics are on your side and your doctor isn't concerned. Two pieces of evidence that things will have a positive outcome.  I completely empathize with your anxiety.  I do go for my biopsy tomorrow and I am totally freaking out. I am trying to keep in mind that its the anxiety that makes things seem so much worse than they really are and that there is a lower probability that something is wrong than it's really nothing.  Try to keep it in mind. Tomorrow, I will be thinking of you and know you are not alone in your anxiety and fear.

I've been having all sorts of neck/jaw issues for the past year... My left ear and neck have some mild pain and pressure on and off and I found a palpable lump under the back of my left jaw (felt like a marble, but it grows and shrinks). My ENT could feel it, so he sent me in for an MRI, which showed tiny scattered lymph nodes and nothing else.

When I calmed down (and started exercising & cut out alcohol), the pain, pressure and lump went away. Now I'm feeling a bit of anxiety over a work project and everything is back. So it does feel like they're stress-related. And you symptoms DEFINITELY sound like stress.

I just want to say thank you all do much for being there and providin words of comfort and support.

I am very pleased to say I was told today that my neck is completely normal. The doctor who performed the ultrasound is a specialist consultant and he was the one Jo diagnosed my benign liver cyst 3 years ago as being benign so I feel I can really trust him. I didn't know it would be him today but apparently his specialisms are head and neck and gastro.

Anyway he said all nodes are complete normal looking size etc. also the 'nodes' I have been feeling and worrying myself sick about for nearly a year are not nodes and Infact are normal muscle. Despit my poor gp telling me this literally 15 or so times.

I am so relieved. That said it makes me so annoyed at myself that my mind lets me believe these scary things despite constant medical reassurance to prove otherwise. He even scanned side of my face up to my ear because I had said I have pressure in my ear. Again all normal.

I asked him if I needed a biopsy of anything and his words were 'absolutely not. If I were to biopsy anything in your neck I would be doing you a total disservice as there is nothing at all that warrants this'.

Thank you so much. I hope I can help anyone else who needs support.

Worrywall I hope all goes well for you and I am praying all ok. Thinking positive for you.

Slang how r u?! I've not seen any posts from you in ages, which I'm guessing is a good thing?x

Hi Hamsterswheel!  Good to hear from you, too... and I'm thrilled your neck is normal!  I knew it would be. :-)

I'm well, thanks... I had some health concerns that have taken ages to figure out (they all seem okay), but I've managed to control the anxiety by exercising, trying some cognitive tricks and forcing myself to tackle my To Do list before I'm allowed to worry.

The "program" is still working... my anxiety is mostly in check. I'm just here because I'm totally procrastinating. ;-)

Everything well with your family?  xx
