Scared Wife Will Die During Wisdom Teeth Extraction
« on: February 23, 2014, 09:28:53 AM »
Hi all,

My wife is scheduled to have her wisdom teeth removed tomorrow. I'm scared she won't wake up from the IV. I'm afraid her heart will stop because of a reaction the medicine, etc. or that she will aspirate while she's under, get some bad infection in her lungs and die. Or that she will suffocate on her own blood when she gets home.

We have two very young children and all I've done for the past few hours is go over in my head how I'll tell them mommy isn't coming home. They will be crushed.

Please help. I've read stories on Google of this happening.

I'm sorry to ask this but does your wife had a heart problems? I can see you really love your wife so much. If not and if she's perfectly healthy then she is going to be fine.

I don't think removal of wisdom teeth is risky. Not really, it's not even close to having a labor which is a bit risky sometimes.

Not really that we know of? Maybe she does and we don't know.

Doctors will test things before putting someone under like that (unless it's a very simple anesthesia like for an endoscopy or something).  But normally they will test things like your heart, etc.   My friend was going to be put under for some kind of minor surgery and they tested her for all things that could pose a risk.  So if she had NO tests, then they aren't needed.  If she did and the procedure is going to go forward, then she's FINE.

Stop Googling. Only on Google you can see such bizarre things happening. If you are scared about that, then you should also be scared every time when she walks out of house, because there are stories of people who got killed in a robbery, or hit by a bus, car, lightning even...

I read about 1 in every 350,000 people die from being put under. That makes me pretty uncomfortable. I can't lose my wife.

You are SUCH a sweet husband (I wish mine were like that...), but she will be just fine, please don't be worrying.  And whatever you do, don't let her know you are worried.

1:350000?! Jesus...you know how unlikely that is? There is a chance for everything.

What you should do is work on your anxiety. Meds, therapy, or doing some CBT on your own...and once more STOP GOOGLING!

I know it sounds far fetched but I can't wrap my brain around it. To me its entirely possible, even likely. Like my brain thinks of it as flipping a coin - a 50/50 chance.

I'm terrified.

I know how you feel exactly, that's why I said, work on your anxiety, go to therapy, take some meds...

You are in panic mode and no amount of reassurance here will help you. Your anxiety needs to be lower so that you could use your rational mind even a bit.

So, take my advice and figure out what is the best way for you to deal with anxiety.
