So I went for a test...
« on: February 19, 2014, 09:07:51 AM »
As some of you may know, I've had a massive fear and anxiety about hiv due to a kiss with a stranger. I've been convinced he's somehow managed to get blood into a small cut in my lips (I tend to bite them). I have no idea of this guys status, but have no reason to suspect he was hiv positive and know how unlikely it is that it could be transferred that way anyway.

I developed an ulcer and mild sore throat on Thursday (they're both healing up and almost away) and then convinced myself that it was seroconversion.  It had been 4 weeks since the kiss, so I decided after reading that the modern 4th gen tests are almost 100% accurate after 4 weeks, to go get tested.

I went this morning and the nurse talked me through how unlikely it was but that she was happy to take the blood and help me get over this. She also referred me to a counsellor and they were wonderful. I've been referred to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy so hopefully will start some sessions with them soon and begin to tackle this.

In the meantime, I have a few days to wait for these results. I'm freaking out slightly as I know this is it. This is everything I've been panicking about for 4 weeks. I'm struggling to keep calm here at work!

Anyone had similar waiting periods? How did you cope?

In a few days you will get the inevitable good news and feel great.
Did they not offer you a rapid instant test?

Thanks!

They didn't, but I'm not sure if they offer it there. It was an NHS GUM clinic. The nurse double checked it was a 4th Gen test they used. She even said that, although she has to tell me the official window is 12 weeks, they'll be reducing that for this new test in April to 4.

I'm hoping the results will be with me Friday afternoon.

Once you get your good results, dont retest again after no risk incidents, as it only increases the odds of a false positive result that would cause you a lot of anxiety.

Just a little update!

I checked for my results today on the automated line and they were unexpectedly ready. Hiv negative :) I was expecting it, but am relieved all the same.

I have an appointment to start some CBT, so am looking forward to getting control of these fears!

Well that's a shock, not!!
I'm glad as it will give you peace of mind, but it was never an issue.
You ever want some advice on the subject, just ask.

haha thanks :D and thanks for the info and advice since posting here from the beginning! :D

I was completely expecting the negative result but couldn't believe it until it was there, if that makes sense? I'm glad I can put this behind me now and focus on the real problem, which is irrational health anxiety!

That makes TOTAL sense to all of us here!  :)
I'm happy for you!  But I don't think any of us who read this had any doubt that it wouldn't be negative.
