Chewing gum and saliva went into nose
« on: February 15, 2014, 06:11:38 PM »
I'm chewing gum and some saliva went up into my nose and burned. I'm worried about the brain eating amoeba. I've read that it can live in the back of your throat.

I'm pretty scared but don't want to google it again, afraid that it will come up that people have it in their throats.

Hey there! I worried about the brain-eating amoeba for years after my mother told me about it (though she too was a hypochondriac. :P) I spent my entire childhood living in fear, so I have a pretty thorough understanding of this nasty thing.

You have to pick it up from somewhere, and while it can enter through your nose after doing something like swimming in unclean water, it doesn't live there (or in your throat, for that matter.) Keep in mind that it's also very, very rare. From 2003 to 2012, only 31 infections were reported in the U.S. I'd say you're fine, just don't Google it! That's my weakness, too.

Thanks. I can't remember where I've seen it said, but I have heard that it has been found in human throats. I've also read that most humans by adulthood have built up antibodies to it because they've been exposed to it through swallowing lake water or other sources and their immune system has attacked it

If it makes you feel any better, I did some searching online, and I haven't found anything related to it living in your throat. I'm no longer afraid of it, so I figured I'd do that for you.

I also know that stomach acid kills the amoebae, so even if you consume contaminated water, you should be okay. I hope this helps to put you at ease!
