Anxiety or heart problem after working out?
« on: February 13, 2014, 08:19:12 PM »
I've started intense cardio workouts, one because tennis season is approaching for me and 2, I'm
Hoping getting even more healthy will subside my HA. The last two days during workouts I'm fine but once I cool down I start getting a shortness of breath feeling, like can't get enough oxygen and just feel off for the rest of the night. Does this sound like anxiety?

Sort of, but not really, but also yes.

What you're experiencing is normal after a work out. But due to anxiety, you've come to associate those normal feelings with anxiety. So even with absolutely nothing wrong, its sitll getting triggered just due to the familiarity.

Do you have asthma and are you working out in cold weather?  If not reassociate your workouts with the fact that you are working out, become in tune with your breathing and realize that you are actually in getting or are in good shape.  Once you get in that rhythm and get in better shape you should really start to get rid of that feeling associated with HA.  Excercise for me is one of the greatest forms of anxiety relief.  I doesn't last all day but reaffirms that there is nothings wrong with me and in fact that I am in better shape that most of the population my age or even younger, but there's always something else to worry about - ha ha.

If you get shortness of breath from exercising you should consult your doctor.

You might feel reassured with a stress test given by a doctor. But I wonder whether you take time to do gentle cool down exercise after a cardio workout. Perhaps some light stretching or slow walking on a treadmill, or even some gentle tai chi moves.

Try giving your heart and lungs some time to return to regular, easy breathing, feeling relaxed and good about your effort.

It's not a shortness of breath like asthma, I had a minor case of that as a kid, it's a feeling like I can't take a deep breath and I constantly try to yawn to do so. It happens when I'm really anxious, but I just didn't know why it would happen after cooling down. During the workout I feel fine

Also had asthma as a child. Sometimes it now likes to kick up, but clears itself.

You may want to get yourself checked with a stress test and breathing capacity test. If you pass these, you can be fairly sure it is good old anxiety. Then you may need to check with a therapist and maybe look into CBT.

Sounds like post-workout fatigue to me, i.e., completely normal!

The length of time you spend feeling that way and the intensity will lessen as you grow more fit. When I first started working out after I quit smoking, it was AWFUL, it would literally take 30mins or so for my heart rate to come down to normal after a short run. Fitness DVDs would have to be paused every 10mins for me to catch my breath.

Feeling a little anxious about it is probably fuelling it and making it worse, this happened to me after I started Insanity and ended up with paramedics at my house, waiting for my 150bpm heart rate to return to normal ...

What would a stress test indicate that an echo and EKG not. My mom is a cardiologist nurse practitoner but said they probably wouldn't give me a stress test because of my fitness level and age.  (6'0 170 varsity athlete 18 yr old)

Your mom knows a lot more than I do. I was just being cautious, never had a stress test myself, but know it is sometimes recommended.

Hope you are enjoying your workouts (as I enjoy mine), not feeling pressured about anything.
