Please help anyone get yellow eyes and high bilirubin levels?
« on: February 12, 2014, 08:02:21 PM »
My son is 16 really active never sick! But he has high bilirubin , here the normal levels are from 0-20 his are 36. I notice sometimes the whites of his eyes are tinged yellow. All bloodwork except the bilirubin comes back good. He also had an abdomal ultrasound and it all came back good. I don't get what could be wrong and I am panicked that I am gonna miss something and he's gonna pass away. Please give me some advice on what I should do. His last blood work and ultrasound was in November.

Depends on the bilirubin level. Higher bilirubin produces more yellowness. I have always yellowish eyes. When you are not eating enough i.e. stomach flu, bilirubin goes up even more.

Epstein Barr virus which causes Mono, is very prevalent among the young adults. You can suggest the doctor to test him for that. It is known that the virus could elevate the bilirubin. But Gilbert's disease makes the most sense.
Wishing your son well! Keep us posted.

There is no test for Gilberts syndrom. They just tell you it's that when other is fine.

Anyway, if he had done direct vs indirect bilirubin he would have high indirect bilirubin and direct in normal limits or very little off. That is a proof of Gilbert's syndrome.
