N. Fowleri scare
« on: February 07, 2014, 04:01:08 PM »
I've posted before about this. Well today I was in a cleaning mood and afterward washed my hands with tap water and dish soap. After that, yes, I picked/scratched the inside of my nose. I've read that N. Fowleri can live on dry surfaces for up to 5 minutes, now I'm convinced I have it...again. We're on a well system, and in our community it's treated, but I'm still leary. There have been numerous times in the bath where my children have gotten our tap water up their nose, and I've also done it in the shower. I know the odds are very low, but can someone reassure me that I DON'T have it???

Whatever the heck that is, I might as well have it and other 6 billion ppl since I bet everyone has done what you did many times.

You shouldn't even know what that Fow...thing is. Seriously.

It's seriously scary! Brain eating amoeba. Dead within a week status, 99% mortality rate. I'm freaking out right now.

It's also incredibly, incredibly rare and is usually found in warm pond or lake water rather than tap water. And even then, it's usually water that is shallow and the ground has been disturbed. I highly doubt it's in your tap water.

It's like there's an epidemic of n fowleri fear on here over the past few months.

I think this is one of the top three diseases us hypos seem to fear.  It's rare, practically deadly and there's no cure. Three of our favourite things.

You are fine :) I think every single person on the planet has scratched inside their nose with a wet finger before and we are all pretty much still kicking :)

Here's the thing -

My finger was actually DRY. I know I shouldn't be freaking out about this. But I've read that the amoeba can live on a dry surface for up to 5 minutes, and after washing my hands, they were dry, but 5 minutes hadn't passed yet. I know I'm more likely to get some type of rare cancer or disease, but that doesn't ease my mind when I feel that my neck is stiff, or I have some nausea, or I wake up in the morning wondering if I can still smell, or when my face feels a little flushed so I am taking my temperature non-stop.

Ugh, realistically, I know it's rare, and HIGHLY unlikely for me to get it with a DRY finger, but "realistically" doesn't help an irrational me right now  :(

Your odds of even being exposed to this in an area it is known to breed is like 0.0000001%.

In treated tap water, on a DRY finger. I think your chances of having this are practically impossible. :)
