please help - beta blockers
« on: February 06, 2014, 01:47:18 PM »
Hello,

Does anyone know how long beta blockers take to work? I have been on them for 3 weeks now in an attempt by the doctor to relieve some weird head rush feeling I get and the panic attacks, dizziness and anxiety.

I haven't had this head rush buzzy weird feeling for over a week, I have had a stressful week at work and have had a week of on and off headaches, inc stabbing pains and pressure headaches and just wondering how long I should leave it for?

The trouble is when I get these symptoms I worry that she my doctor is still missing the symptoms of something much more seriously wrong with my brain!

Please help

The rush feeling is adrenaline, and Beta blockers basically inhibit the effect adrenaline has on the heart and body. Beta Blockers won't actually stop you from feeling anxious. And unless you suffer from chronic migraines, they don't do much for headaches.. If you are having constant headaches, which in your case, is most likely a stress induced tension headache, you should consult your doctor.

Hello,

Thank you for your comments, the doctor seemed fairly adamant these feelings were anxiett. I have been to the doctors many times over the last 4 months and they alll say the headaches are anxiety and tension headaches - so maybe I should just start believing them, the difficult thing is I have no real strategy to deal with them or how to avoid them. I am starting CBT soon, so hopefully that will help me, the symptoms make me feel anxious then they get worse, then fear kicks in etc etc etc, just wish they would stop!

Are they mild/dull headaches, or like throbbing/pulsating headaches?

They tend to be dull persistent headaches dotted over various areas of my head, with intermittent stabbing pains with or without headaches.

My physician told me that headaches can be caused by tension in your neck, shoulders and back.
He said that allergy, ear and sinus issues can cause headaches.

Sounds like a tension headache to me. How do I know? I get them too.. But next time you're very stressed be conscious of how tight your muscles are. Especially your shoulders. You will be like wow! It really is crazy how tense you get when you're stressed. Most of us never notice it. Try relaxing your muscles and loosen up.
