Severe Dysplastic Nevi??
« on: February 05, 2014, 10:18:19 PM »
Hi, I just had a biopsy on a mole that came back as severe Dysplastic Nevi. I am going next week to have more tissue removed. Anyone know what the 'severe' means? Does it mean it was close to melanoma? My anxiety is out of control. I am relieved they didn't say Melanoma and I should be happy and worry free but now I feel like I am back at square 1, worrying and thinking that every other mole I have is or will be Melanoma. The worry is never ending. Thanks for any advice.

From what I have read the link between "dysplastic moles" and melanoma isn't so clear. They aren't really "pre-cancer" or anything like that because most of them don't even turn into anything, even ones that are "severe". It's like a "might turn into something, so better to remove it" type thing I believe. The good thing is that it is gone, and you don't have to worry about it anymore.

I have had dysplastic nevi and my dermatologist said they are removed because there is a greater potential of them
turning to cancer, not necessarily guaranteeing they turn to cancer.

Thank you both for your responses. I know I should be happy with these results but my anxiety about my health is ridiculous. The worrying never ends.
