Are you on meds?
« on: February 05, 2014, 04:10:55 PM »
I have GAD, this terrible health fear and mild to moderate depression.

Recently I mentioned having anxiety to a Dr. and he gave me ativan to take when things get really terrible.  I took one yesterday when I felt sick with worry and was googling my symptoms (it's also when I found this wonderful site), and it really helped.

Anyway, I am sort of scared to take medicine because I think it may cause cancer or something in the long term.  Now I'm reconsidering and thinking that it's terrible to live this way and perhaps it's not so bad to take something if I need to.  And I think I need to.

Are you on meds?  And if so, what do you take?

I take Xanax as needed.  Sometimes it's needed once daily, sometimes it's not needed for weeks.  I am also in menopause and the Xanax stops the night sweats.

I am.  There is no correlation between cancer and SSRIs or benzos.

I take Celexa and have Xanax as needed.  I was so resistant to meds but it literally changes your life.  It's sooooo good not to have constant fears and what ifs running through your head like a broken record.

Prozac for 3 weeks and Klonopin 0.5mg...now quitting Klonopin.

Anyway, you shouldn't be afraid of meds, they will help you.

I am as well. I take Effexor XR and it has worked well for me. I have gone off of it twice and ended up back in the black, anxious hole. I was resistant to taking them but I probably won't ever go off of them now.

Don't be afraid and be patient as they do take time to take full effect. All the best.

I did the same tweenie.  This last time was the worst ever.  I started back 5 weeks ago and I won't ever go off again.

Yes, and that is why I won't stop again...my episodes were getting worse each time. Sometimes we just have to take the first step to getting on the right path and for me, meds and group therapy was the way to go.

I'm always amazed that People spend a lot of time worrying about meds and the "chemicals" they contain so consequently they don't take meds which could help them, yet they have no problems with the weird chemicals in their food, soda, McDonalds, pre-packaged food, etc.

Thanks very much everybody, for your replies!  I really appreciate it.

I agree with you Patmob.  I don't do any fast food, pre-prepared foods or sodas, and I buy organic when I can.  I also don't use any pesticides or that sort of thing.

I live in South Africa and I can't always buy organic, and it sort of freaks me out that I've been eating pesticide-laden ::) food for the last 9 years.  I want to have an organic garden, but the baboons would raid it!  This is how paranoid I am about chemicals/pesticides, ect...I'm going up to a malaria area later in the month, and I've found a natural anti-malaria medicine to take.  Also, I have some spray that has no pesticides in it that I'll use.

I think I also have an issue with meds because I'm scared of being my mom, who is hooked on all kinds of prescription pills.

However, I can also see how crazy-thinking it is - when it could improve my life.  Taking an ativan the other day when I was in a terrible state was a huge step for me.

I so wish I were... I'm trying to get pregnant so I can't take any meds.

I remember the good days when Lorazepam would bring joy to my life lol.

@psychopika - once you are pregnant you will have so many other things on your mind, then at the end a little baby to bring REAL joy to your life.   You won't have time to concentrate on bad health things.  I know if I am occupied with some interest I am really good, but times like now when I have NOTHING going on in my life I take up that brain space with worry of every disease in the book.
