Liver Enzyme Poll
« on: January 28, 2014, 10:43:33 AM »
Trying to take a poll before I got to my doctor at 1:15 today.

Have you ever had raised liver enzymes?
If so, how high?  Was your Alkaline Phosphotase really high?  If so, how high?
What was done to test?
What was your diagnosis?

I am trying to figure out the best course of action and to gauge if what my doctor is doing is sufficient to follow up on my high levels.

To let you know, mine are the following in two different tests, about a month and half apart, with different labs

AST    81 and 60
ALT    94 and 70
ALP   453 and 500

I have had elevated bilirubin almost every time I have bloodwork.  All other liver enzymes seem OK.

Dr. told me it is nothing to worry about unless I start getting yellowed with jaundice.

To date, it has never happened.

Yes, mine were high.  I had them done at different labs at different times.  I freaked out over numbers from one compared to the other until I talked to my doctor.  He said each lab is sort of calibrated to itself, so unless that lab said it was high, it wasn't high.  I think on mine anything over, let's say 50, was high, and I was about 55.  My next test was a 70, so I was concerned, but that lab said anything over 65 was high.  So, you have to keep that in mind when comparing one lab to another.  They establish what ranges are "normal" based on how they do the test.

Now that I've lost weight I'm in the normal range.   :happy0151:

Right, I understand that.

Mine were actually high on both labs though.

Just got back from my doctor a bit ago.  They Took LDH and GGT and moved up my ultrasound.  I am to go back in two weeks to the doctor.

They are actually concerned this time, not a creation of my own.
I asked the doctor whether they thought it was my weight and they said no, they didn't think so, but I should lose weight.

So, not sure.  I am about 30 lbs overweight.

Well, hang in there.  It's all part of the process.  I've been to the stage you're at with other body parts, things have worked out fine for me.  Keep us updated here if you can.

Thanks so much.  My mom had Primary Biliary Cirrohis, so I am very scared that it could be that.

That isn't a good disease to have, as the only cure is transplant.

Yeah, I almost wish mine looked like yours.  My Alk Phos is the high one, which is more apt to be PBC

I think your GGT  would be very high, too. Did you take an ANA test to see if you have an autoimmune disease.

I understand your fear. ....
