Afraid to drive
« on: January 27, 2014, 12:10:33 PM »
I'm afraid to drive and when there is snow I'm terrified. A lot of the time I have my husband drive me to and from work. But he can't all the time and on snowy days i literally sit at work and worry about my drive home which causes me not being able to give my job my full attention. Anyone feel similarly? Any one have any ideas on how to cope with this better?

What exactly are you so afraid of?   If you did get into an accident it would only be a fender bender because everyone just creeps along in the snow.   If it's because you don't want to deal with insurance companies, the damages wouldn't be bad, maybe a scratch or a tiny dent that could be pulled out with a plunger.

Can totally relate. What I notice is the anxiety is worse before I get in the car. Once I'm in it I am surprisingly calm. Am in control.

Snow is harder, of course, but four wheel drive, going slow, can be quite safe. Best is never to give in to the fears. The more we overcome them the stronger we get.

I can relate as well.  I don't like driving, to be honest, and wish I didn't need to.  Usually I'll do what you do: worry about it beforehand. But, when I get behind the wheel, I focus more on the actual driving, so even though I'm still anxious and my heart's pounding, I don't pay much attention to it at all.

The best way to deal with it is to simply drive; drive short distances to start with, and work your way outward when you are comfortable.  It doesn't have to be much.
