Waking up with pins/needles in my hand
« on: January 21, 2014, 06:06:17 AM »
Hey guys!

On and off for 10months I have a problem where I wake up feeling there are thousand pins and needles pressing my right hand...feeling usually lasts for couple of minutes. I also wake up sometimes with numbness in some of the fingers left/right hand also goes away in few minutes. I don't get this during the day, just when I wake up.

Did you have smth similar? Is anxiety/tension most likely cause or smth else?

I've been having this as well. I can't ever get a good nights sleep so I'm going to a back doctor tomorrow. I'll let you know if he has any insight :)

I have felt the same way for many years sometimes and I attribute it to the way I am sleeping or lying in bed.

Thank you for your replies. I too believe this is due to way of sleeping or tension while sleeping. No harm in checking though.

It happens from curling your arm in a hyper flexed position for hours at a time while you are sleeping. Try to keep your arms straight. I know its hard because most of us curl our arms in bed but it can lead to compression of the ulnar nerve which is what I'm dealing with right now, cubital tunnel syndrome at my left elbow. They recommend wrapping your arm in a towel before bed that way you wont be able to hyper flex your arm all night long. You probably wont have the numbness anymore when you wake up.

Yeah, you are compressing a nerve while you sleep. It's pretty normal and happens to me often. Nothing to get nervous over though.

Hi Hypo84,

I ve been having the exact same thing lately. It's been a few weeks I wake up almost every morning with my hand tingling and 1 or 2 fingers numb. It goes away after I move my hand a little, but now I'm obviously concerned...

Glad to hear I'm not alone with this. Do you have any other symptoms ? or thats the only one?

Thank you all for replies!

@Jade1

I have a few more...when I sitting is some way I get tingling below left shoulder (back side). And also I get electrical impulses in my left foot pinky when I rub root of that finger and same thing in achilles heel when I rub hamstring of left leg.

I was worried a lot of MS, but now I am more calm.

Like others said, this is definitely just from how you're sleeping.  You're compressing a nerve somewhere in your arm or hand.  I've actually had this many times before and was told that as long as it goes away after waking and doesn't occur randomly throughout the day then it's totally harmless and fine.
