UPDATE: Breast lump
« on: January 20, 2014, 04:14:00 PM »
To make a long story short: About two weeks ago I found a round smooth, firm, not very mobile lump in my breast. Went to GP who said she didn't think it was anything to worry about but because every lump needs to investigated she sent me to a breast health clinic to see a specialist. I'm 30, breastfed for 3.5 years, two kids, no family history.
So I had my appointment on Thursday with a breast specialist and my clinical examination went great. She felt it and immediately said that it feels like a cyst and is of "low concern" She said we would do some imaging on it and I had a mammogram that day. The mammogram came back NORMAL! Her exact words were "so far so good hun" but then she sent me for an ultrasound. I asked if my mammogram is normal why do I need an US and she told me that sometimes ultrasounds pick up tiny cysts that the mammograms can miss. I should be ecstatic right? Wrong, I have this nagging feeling like she was not completely truthful with me. Why did my mammogram come back normal even though I can still feel the lump? it must have missed it, if it can miss a cyst than surely it can miss a cancerous tumor... right? The radiology tech told me that the doctor I saw was amazing and that if she had concerns she would have told me as she is very direct. I'm only 30 which is why I was surprised to have even had a mammogram as my understanding is that they are not accurate in woman my age. Please tell me that it sounds like my health anxiety is getting the best of me? I'm still scared and of course thinking of worse case scenario. I don't get my US until the 12th of February... How am I supposed to get through the next few weeks??? ugggh!!!

Relax, I can tell you exactly what is going on. Had the same situation in the summer. The gyn feels the lump, says it's probably a cyst but also says that they check out any lump and sends me for mammogram right away. The mammography did not (!) pick up the cyst (as they often don't). The radiologist says that it  is a good sign, because mammograms often don't show cysts. So to confirm it is the cyst, they do an ultrasound, which EASILY picks up the cyst (because it is fluid filled, it shows on the ultrasound). So the radiologist puts the ultrasound thing on my breast and immediately confirms that it is a normal looking cyst with no further concern. That's why they do the ultrasound. They can confirm the diagnosis (which they can't by mammogram). They can also tell the difference between a simple and a complex (not only fluid in it) as well. If that is the case, they will watch it. Mine wasn't even followed up. And it disappeared within two months.
So, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - suspicious in the fact they do an ultrasound. In fact, any lump is always looked at with both tools.

- I am a fellow hypo and of course what happened was, that when the radiologist told me that it was 100% a cyst and I felt this huge relief, she said "I do see some calcifications on the mammogram though, that I want you to follow up with your imaging center at home (I was out of town when I found the lump). They need to compare our images to your old ones... don't worry, but if they are new calcifications, you'll need a biopsy..".  Great - I was in panic for 4 weeks until I saw the radiologist at home who looked at both film and confirmed it was fine.... It always happens to us, doesn't it?

I'll tell you my experience. When I was 19/20 I had a hard, immovable, painless, pea sized lump in my breast. I had it for several months before I got it checked. When I did, I got sent for a mammogram and a sonogram. The mammogram came back normal! The ultrasound showed something but they couldn't 100% say what it was. It was not concerning enough to biopsy though. They said come back in 6 month  for followup ultrasound. It made me feel better just to know they weren't worried enough to biopsy. In those 6 months the lump shrunk so small I couldn't feel it anymore. Ultrasound showed it still there but it had shrunk significantly. Doc called and said it was either a cyst or lymph node but it shrunk so congrats! Not cancer! I'll be 24 in June and the lump never got big enough to feel again. Even the scary lumps like mine are often nothing Hun ;)

I, too, have the same issue going on right now. I am 33 and no history. I felt a bean size and shaped lump on my left breast a few weeks ago. It is painless and moveable. It sometimes feels rubbery and sometimes feels more firm. It varies depending on if I am lying down or standing up. It is hard to tell, really, because it moves so much. I can feel it in both positions and it seems to be near the skin surface. I had my husband feel it and he thinks its nothing. I am quite sure it feels different than surrounding tissue.  I have my appointment for a mammogram and ultrasound on the 30th.  I hate this.

Hypo, your lump is moveable so that's a good thing. Also the fact that you're young and have no family history is a good thing, also the fact that it moves is also a good thing. Remember the VAST majority of lumps especially in woman our age turn out to be NOTHING. Stay off Google... I made that mistake this morning and have had a pretty aweful day as a result. Keep us posted. uggh, if only I could follow my own advice. Keep us posted and stay strong!!!

Thanks! I haven't been googling much, I just push around on the lump until I convince myself of something bad or I think it is nothing and it is turning into something bad because I push on it too much!.  It is a vicious, stupid cycle.

I had this in August. Went in for my annual pap and exam. My GYN found the lump, but I had just done a self breast exam the day before, and never felt a thing. So the fact that she felt it and I didn't scared me. In fact, up until this appointment my health anxiety seemed to be in "remission". She actually felt a few lumps, but wanted to send me out for an ultrasound on the biggest one. So I got in the next morning to do the ultrasound. They saw the cyst and said it was fluid filled and nothing to worry about - This was a Thursday. But because I was so worried about it, I wanted to get a second opinion so the following Tuesday I got in with a different imaging place and had another breast ultrasound. By Tuesday, they couldn't even find the cyst! She had me show her where it was, and she marked a dot on my skin of where it was supposed to be, and she even brought in the radiographer to scan me because she couldn't find it. And guess what? He couldn't find it either!

They said that if I were dehydrated, my body will try to store up water in my breasts, creating fluid filled cysts. I remember that between Thursday and Tuesday I had been drinking a lot of water, so my cyst could've disappeared because of that.

Or it could've been God's diving healing, because me and the rest of my family were doing A LOT of prayer in this time - so I don't want to rule that out either.

I'm sure it's nothing to worry about hun. My GYN told me that if you have breasts, you're going to have cysts. There's just no way around it. Even men have cysts in their breasts from time to time. It just happens. So chug chug chug water between now and your appointment and your cyst might not even be there! Oh! And pray pray pray too! - Can't go wrong with that one!!!

My mammogram and ultrasound came back fine. She did see a cyst on both but it is just that...a benign cyst. Good luck to those of you waiting.

Just wanted to update you all. I finally had my ultrasound, it came back mildly suspicious of cancer... had a biopsy done 10 days later (worst 10 days ever). Just got the results yesterday. No breast cancer! No fibroadenoma which was suspected. report says "Benign breast parenchyma with focal sclerosing adenosis" doctor said it is nothing to be concerned about and gave me the option to remove it or monitor it. Im choosing to have it removed! Thank you all for your well wishes. I'm so very grateful. xoxo
