5 HTP & Ashwagandha & L-Tyrosine
« on: January 20, 2014, 03:51:18 PM »
Hey there, im new to this forum and very new to the topic "anxiety".
Since i had a bad year and kinda burn out / breakdown i am working against
anxiety and panic attacks. by speaking to my therapist im trying to avoid heavy
chemical stuff as i think its going to be a temporary disorder... ;-)

im working kinda fine with 5 HTP since a couple of weeks, i consulted an ayurvedic
doctor who didnt know it but gave me Ashwaghanda (Mentat) for nerve improvement
working against anxiety.

i read a lot about it - ashwaghanda seems to be really good working, after a time.

anybody has experience in combining both - 5 HTP and ashwagandha? or even LTyrosin?
would be great to get some input...

thanks!

Welcome to Anxiety Zone,

The placebo effect is a wonderful thing. The promotion of the serotonin precursor 5-HTP for anxiety and depression is based on the concept that these disorders are caused by too little serotonin in the brain. Unfortinately, this is a myth. The opposite is probably true. See: Serotonin: The 'chemical imbalance' myth

Antidepressants don't work by raising serotonin levels, but by encouraging the growth of new brain cells in the hippocampi regions of the brain to replace those killed by chronic stress hormone exposure. Whatever effect they have on serotonin, and it's mostly to reduce its synthesis and expression, are a byproduct of the process, not the therapeutic effect.

Ashwaghanda and L-Tyrosine may have some effect at the margins for mild anxiety, but they are unlikely to do much for panic disorder.

The only treatments with similar effectiveness as the antidepressants are the cognitive and/or behavioural and/or mindfulness therapies.

NOTE: I'm not a doctor, and particularly not yours, so there may be factors I'm unaware of. Therefore all advice is of a general nature and you should consult your doctor before following any of it, especially before changing med doses.

If your anxiety is more than mild your wasting your time... My mom is a natural health specialist and she gets mad when I say this but it's true if your mind is strong it will over power these herbs because thy don't cross the BBB. Anxious people usually have weak adrenals tho and ashwaghanda is a good adapting for your adrenal gland so nonetheless id keep taking the ashwaghanda
