It won't stop, pls help
« on: January 16, 2014, 07:43:05 PM »
I'm supposed fly tomorrow, I can't stop having panic attacks at night. I got klonopin  from doctor but it only helps in the short run. I 've never had anxiety like this. I'm thinking about canceling my trip but I'm afraid ill never fly again if i do. I don't know why it's suddenly become so bad!

It's become so bad because you fear it will be bad.

You need to understand that things like this are self-driven positive feedback loops. There's no way to fix the problem without the hard work of confronting the disease head on, unfortunately.

Have the panic attack. Use deep breathing to get through it and manage the symptoms. Deep breathing will force the body to reduce the concern for danger and reign the sympathetic nervous system back in. It won't instantly fix the problem, but it will reduce the symptoms and they'll taper off within an hour or so of the panic attack. By doing this you reinforce to your brain that it is anxiety - but you first need to accept that this is anxiety/panic and it *cannot harm you*.

Canceling your trip would be a great way to let anxiety win and continually dominate every aspect of your life. You can't run from the dangerous place. The only way to make the dangerous place go away is to put yourself in the dangerous place.

Dont let it win ! You can do this. Anxiety is all in our heads. Wish you all the best.

Thanks so much for the help. the klonopin started work and I feel better. My friend in CO (where im flying to) convinced me we would have a great time and she's very holistic and wants to help with the anxiety issues. The klonopin worked good enough that I fairly certain I can get on the plane. It will help until I get back and look into getting cognitive therapy. I'm also going to be taking gentle yoga and have my thyroid checked.

I had another quick question is it normal to have anxiety attacks only in the evening? I was functional at work, sure I was in over the hurdle and the bam I was hit again.

Thanks again.

Hi Lara...

Congratulations!!! :sign0060: You put your anxiety/panic attacks in their place, and didn't let them stop you from living your life, and enjoying it too.

Like the words of the song goes, "Life is a journey, not a destination..."

You have a great time, and live in the moment!!! :happy0062: The very best to you!...  Chuck
