Stomach cramps and naseau
« on: December 22, 2013, 08:06:36 PM »
Hi,

I've suffered from GAD for 10 years now and a couple of weeks ago I started getting stomach cramps at work which I have never had before. Then came the naseau and it felt so bad that on my way home in the train I had to lean my head up against the window to try to relax myself so that I wouldn't vomit.

Sometimes it is manageable and sometimes it is really awful. The thing is I'm not sure if it is physical or a symptom of anxiety. I'm currently on two weeks annual leave during the holiday season at work otherwise there is no way I could go to work like this. I have been to the doctors twice now and he has given me medications and said it was a gastro bug.

Does anyone else get cramps and sickness in their stomach? I don't feel I can cope with this am worried that it is a new anxiety symptom that I just can't deal with right now.

Hello,

Since you've been to a doctor and s/he said it was a gastro bug, then it may well be one but it should start to clear up in a few days . . . now, if it does not, and I am just speaking from my own experience and not as a med professional, you may be having what I have had which is Irritable Bowel Syndrome . . .because the brain and the gastrointestinal track use the same nerve system, etc. (my doc explained it to me, but I don't remember the technical details), someone like myself, and perhaps you, when we are suffering from anxiety (and it may be even unknown to us), we can develop a GI tract symptomology . . . called IBS . . . .for me, when I had an IBS episode, it feels like my gut is moving all over the place (and, apparently it is), I want to vomit, I feel sweaty, etc. etc. . . . .\

Now, my question would probably be is if there is some stress (new or recurring) that seems to be taking a prominent stage in your life right now . . .this may be causing your GI issues . . . .if, however, the symptoms clear up in the next 3-4 days, it might be a gastro bug; if not, then you may want to consider asking for a referral to a GI specialist who will be able to determine if it is a physical / medical issue such as diverticulosis or if it is a physical / anxiety issue . . . Personally, and it takes time, I had a lot of success with mindfulness techniques . . . .I still get anticipation anxiety (reason why I cannot eat before a presentation) but the GI issues such as the IBS are not as pronounced or as long lasting . . . for example, prior, if I had a presentation on a Thursday, I would feel sick the week before and then the week after; now, I might feel anxious a day or so before the presentation but within 24 hours of the presentation, the feeling has disappeared . . .

So, you are not alone . . . I know perhaps 4 or 5 other people who have the same reaction but the strategy was to identify the cause of the anxiety and dealing with the cause usually helped to resolve the GI issues . . . sorry I could not be of more help . . . if you can, let us know how you are doing, take care, kc

Thanks for the reply. I am definitely sweating from the hands right now and my stomach does feel over the place. At the moment it feels like I am trapped in a never ending anxiety attack and I can't do anything. I feel like I am going crazy and will end up in hospital or worse.

I can barely eat anything and this morning all I had for breakfast was one slice of toast. I have an appointment this afternoon with the doctor though.

Glad that you are off to see a doctor . . .sometimes, for those of us with anxiety, it is difficult to manage the gut-anxiety connection, but it can be done . . .it is a process and that can be frustrating and even disappointing . . . .but do come here often as you can because we will support you in any way we can . . . sometimes a change in diet helps the IBS and there are meds that can settle the IBS . . .well, it works more, I think on the anxiety . . . I was fortunate that lifestyle changes and mindfulness did a lot for me but a friend of mine takes meds for his IBS and he says that 95% of the time it works but, at the same time, he is also seeing a counselor to work through several personal and professional stressful situations . . .

Regardless, you are doing the right thing to keep in touch with your doctor and go from there . . .take care, kc

It could be anxiety, but have you been tested for h-pylori?

I haven't been tested for anything yet. The doctor is convinced that it is an infection and I am on a new medication of stomach anti biotics that I have never had before. I do feel a bit better this morning though and I may go for a walk later if I feel up to it.

I'm still not sure if it is physical or mental and that is the worst part.

Thanks for the replies.

Hello, Aussie!

I get this all the time. So much that I consider it to be perfectly normal for me. Your digestive system and ability to eat properly is mainly controlled mentally, so anxiety will certainly take it's toll on your appetite and well-being. I have gone many days without any appetite and feeling ill after having an anxiety attack. Abdominal cramps and nausea come along in a package deal too, unfortunately. Since you didn't mention any other symptoms, I would assume there isn't any type of infection.

Hope you feel better soon!  :bouncy:

Same thing happened to me in July. I was diagnosed with gastritis due to extreme stress and my anxiety attacks were making the matter worse. I couldn't work, sleep, all in all function properly. Once I realized it was stress, i finally got better. But it comes back after every anxiety attack. At least I know what it is now :)

Whenever my anxiety really revs up - I come down with Gastritis which is pretty much what you've described, stomach pains, nausea, unable to eat, tired, etc. I can usually kick it with a short term medication like Prilosec or Pepcid ... anxiety can really mess with your Seratonin and Seratonin is really populated in your gut - which in turn causes digestive symptoms.

Also, try taking a daily probiotic supplement - I take one every morning and really feel that it helps!

Thanks for the replies. I do feel it was something physical though as my stomach seems to have been a bit better lately, unfortunately my anxiety is still high. I've never had these kinds of stomach issues with anxiety before though and if my anxiety is still high in a weeks time I might have to consider going to the doctor and giving work a miss.

I have been exercising in the meantime and eating well so hopefully it was just a stomach infection that wound up my anxiety levels and nothing more severe.
